River defeats Boca 2-1 to move 1 point off lead

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — River Plate defeated Buenos Aires archrival Boca Juniors 2-1 on Sunday to move within a point of the lead in Argentina's first division.

Ramiro Funes Mori scored the winner in the 85th minute after Juan Roman Riquelme leveled the score at 1-1 in the 67th, an equalizer that had sent the home crowd into jubilant cheering at Boca's La Bombonera stadium.

Manuel Lanzini had put River ahead on the 57th.

River Plate improved to 17 points, one behind leader Colon. Boca remained on 12 points. It was River's first victory in Boca's stadium since 2004.

Boca was slightly better in the first half but failed to finish several chances.

The match opened up in the second, and Riquelme's equalizer from a free kick gave Boca the energy it needed to play for the three points.

But Funes Mori ruined the day with a header from a corner that beat Boca keeper Agustin Orion.

In other results Sunday, Colon lost 1-0 to Arsenal, and Lanus defeated Rosario Central 2-1.

On Saturday, Velez Sarsfield thrashed Gimnasia 5-1, while Newell's and Quilmes had a 1-1 draw and Altetico Rafaela drew 2-2 with Racing Club.

All Friday's matches ended in scoreless draws: All Boys 0, Godoy Cruz 0; Estudiantes 0, Olimpo 0; Belgrano 0, Argentinos Juniors 0.
