Roche warns of counterfeit cancer drug in US

WASHINGTON (AP) — The maker of the widely prescribed cancer drug Avastin is warning doctors and patients about counterfeit vials of the product that have been distributed in the U.S.

Roche's Genentech unit said Tuesday that the fake products do not contain the key ingredient in Avastin, which is used to treat cancers of the colon, lung, kidney and brain. The drug is a huge money-maker for Roche, generating about $6 billion a year.

A spokeswoman said the counterfeit drug has been distributed to health care facilities in the U.S., though it's unclear how many vials are in circulation or where they may be concentrated. The company is working with the Food and Drug Administration to track down the counterfeit vials and analyze their contents.

"We're still analyzing what it is, we know it doesn't contain the active ingredient in Avastin," said Genentech spokeswoman Charlotte Arnold.

Avastin is administered in doctor's offices and hospitals.

"It's an infused medicine and not something a patient would have in their hands, so it's really health care providers who should be on the lookout," Arnold said.

The counterfeit products do not have "Genentech" printed on their packaging, which appears on all FDA-approved cartons and vials of the drug. Additionally, legitimate Avastin contains a six-digit lot number with no letters. All the packaging text should be in English.

The company believes drugs labeled with the following lot numbers may be fake: B86017, B6011 and B6010.

In a related action, the FDA said late Tuesday it has contacted 19 medical practices that may have purchased unapproved drugs, including counterfeit Avastin, from a company called Quality Specialty Products. The foreign supply company may also do business as Montana Health Care Solutions, the agency said.

"FDA has requested that the medical practices stop using any remaining products from these suppliers," the FDA said in a statement. Genentech said the suppliers listed by the FDA are not authorized to distribute Avastin.

Genentech was alerted to the problem by foreign health regulators and company officials believe the counterfeits were imported from abroad, though they could not specify which country. Genentech packages Avastin at U.S.-based manufacturing facilities and is based in South San Francisco. Its parent company, Roche Holding AG, is based in Basel, Switzerland.

Doctors who suspect they have received counterfeit drug should contact the FDA's criminal unit or Roche's quality assurance department.

Avastin works by choking off the blood supply that feeds tumors. It was the first drug of its kind approved by the FDA.

The injectable drug was the 14th best-selling drug in the U.S. in 2010, according to data tracking firm IMS Health.

Drug contamination and counterfeiting has become a growing concern for U.S. pharmaceutical companies as they have increasingly moved operations offshore. About 80 percent of the active ingredients used in U.S. prescription drugs are now manufactured overseas, according to congressional investigators.

In 2008, a contaminated blood thinner called heparin was connected with dozens of deaths and hundreds of allergic reactions across the U.S. after being imported from China. An FDA investigation concluded the drug had been intentionally contaminated with an ingredient that mimics heparin "to reduce the costs of production."

Recent legislation introduced in the House would give the FDA greater resources and authority to inspect foreign drug imports. Separate legislation would create a mandatory barcode system to monitor the authenticity of all prescription drugs moving through the U.S. supply chain.

Greed, and moving operations OFFSHORE seem to go hand in hand:

What on this earth are they who contaminated the heparin trying to prove?
      • Richard Charbonneau 3 mths ago
trying to prove? they could make more money? Simple enough here.

Just another example of how pathetic our health care system is. A drug maker generating about $6 billion a year on the sale of a drug for fighting cancer.

If the drug companies were not so greedy and sold drugs at a reasonable price then there would be no need to black market and fake drugs.

Viagra from Wallgreens $16 as pill, Viagra from Canada $1.60 a pill. Look it up. I'm only using that as an example because Viagra is not like a Cancer drug that cost a billion to develop it was a spin off from a blood pressure drug they already had and the cost according to a doctor I know is about $.05 each and they sell it for $16-$18....nice mark up don't ya think/?

While I certainly can't outright trust counterfeiters, I don't think we can take greedy pharmaceutical companies at their word, either.

It's amazing that people will produce a fake cancer drug and destroy the survival chances of cancer patients around the World. The perps should be tried for murder and, if convicted, executed on the spot.

OK want to know the rest of the story. Genentech is a scumbag company!!! Follow me.

Genentech has a very similar drug called Lucentis that works basically the same way cutting off blood supply but it is for macular degeneration. OK now here is where they get cute: Lucentis is approved for macular degeneration and the dose is $2,500 per dose but no insurance company now medicare will pay for it because it has to be injected monthly for about 18 months = $45,000 plus 18 trips to the eye surgeon = $50,000 out of your personal pocket. Sound good so far? I mean really how many people can spring for 50K?

Now here is where it gets interesting. The Avastin which is also very expensive and works basically the same way can be diluted to "eye strength" at a cost of about $50 a shot AND doctors are doing it on their own taking some risk for their patients, BECAUSE it's not approved for the eye.

It gets better, although it's not FDA approved for the eye insurance companies will pay for it BECAUSE it's only $50 a month. So insurance companies will not pay for an approved drug but they will pay for one NOT approved.???????????????

Oh no I'm not finished. Please hang in there, I'm getting there. Genentech is hording the patent on Avastin for the eye.......but they won't bring it to the FDA for approval even though the FDA has told them it will get approved. Why? Uh duh, lets see sell 18 treatments at $50,000 or sell 18 treatments at $900.....hmmmm? I see a plot here.

Come on don't crap out on me yet. Congressional committee calls them before the committee on complaints from doctors, patients AND the FDA. Question Mr. dirtbag company why do you have this patent on a drug that is and has been tested on thousands of people with similar results to Lucentis and not getting it approved? Dirtbag company answer: Oh gee it's because we are just not sure YET and we would never want to endanger the public. Congressional committee: Is that your answer, you're not sure....or is it you ARE sure you would lose billions approving a drug you already have? Answer: Oh no we just want to be safe.......and make billions while the common man can not afford the real stuff.

Congress did threaten them to approve it or lose the patent. that was 2 years ago and ZERO has happened because Genentech sicked the lobbyist dogs on the congress members.

I spent a lot of time on this, not posting here but researching. BTW: I paid for the good stuff and it worked but how about the people that can't? One can only hope the bunch of them need to use their own cancer drug.

      rant off

And yet again, the FDA did NOTHING to prevent this from happening. All their regulations, fees, permits, and taxes have pushed the manufacturers to outsource to foreign lands for the ingredients, so they can keep their profit margins up. Face it, without the big returns on the product, investors are less willing to put the money into it. The government is a BIG factor of the final costs of anything made in the USA.
    • Patty  •  3 mths ago
If the pharmaceuticals would stop robbing people, then maybe both doctors and patients wouldn't be so desperate to find products made elsewhere. In this country, pharmaceuticals should be state run as far as I'm concerned. Pay bonuses for new research, encouraging people to lead in the industry - but don't make it a "for profit" business. I am a capitalist through and through, but it is ridiculous to pay $600 or more for one pill at times.

THIS was happening at least 7-8 years PRIOR to what they are saying... As a critical care nurse we were seeing a specific type of reaction that was later labled "HIT" for herarin induced thrombocytopenia
MANY patients were being killed by these meds that were APPROVED by our own FDA....

THINK back to any of your families that were in the hospitals for blood clot issues that developed a "reaction" to the meds... MOST of those who reacted DIED unless we caught the issue within HOURS of the initial reaction.. I was there... This is fact.

Hmmm... Maybe those same US drug companies that have lobbied OUR congress to keep us from getting meds from NON US sources need to be making the meds HERE in the US....
