Rocket Launches Into Dazzling Northern Lights Show

A team of scientists launched a small rocket into an eye-popping northern lights display Saturday (Feb. 18) in an attempt to discover what makes auroras tick.

The two-stage suborbital rocket blasted off from the Poker Flat Research Range just north of Fairbanks, Ala., and reached a height of about 217 miles (349 kilometers) as part of a NASA-funded study into how the northern lights can affect signals from global positioning system (GPS) satellites and other spacecraft.

"We're investigating what’s called space weather," said the study's lead investigator Steven Powell of Cornell University in a statement. "Space weather is caused by the charged particles that come from the sun and interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. We don’t directly feel those effects as humans, but our electronic systems do."

Photos of Saturday's launch show the rocket as a dazzling streak of light soaring into a bright curtain of green hues created by the northern lights. [Photos of the rocket launch and aurora]

Auroras are created when charged particles from the sun hit the Earth's upper atmosphere, triggering a glowing light show. The charged particles are funneled to Earth's polar regions by the planet's magnetic field, creating the northern lights and their southern counterpart the southern lights. The sun is currently in an active phase of its solar weather cycle, which is expected to peak in 2013, and can pose an interference risk to satellites that provide navigation, communications and other services to users on Earth, researchers said.

"We are becoming more dependent on these signals," Powell said. "This will help us better understand how satellite signals get degraded by space weather and how we can mitigate those effects in new and improved GPS receivers."

Powell and his team used a 46-foot (14-meter) Terrier-Black Brant sounding rocket to probe a 6-mile (9.6-km) thick layer of the aurora. The suborbital rocket carried antennas and sensors to measure the electric fields spawned by the northern lights. The launch was dubbed the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling in the Alfven resonator (MICA) mission, researchers said.

The scientists hope the experiment equipment will offer a glimpse into how parts of the upper atmosphere are affected by so-called Alfven waves, a type of electromagnetic energy that scientists suspect to be a driving force behind Earth's auroras. The rocket liftoff off at 8:41 p.m. Alaska Standard Time (which corresponds to Sunday at 12:41 a.m. EST, or 0541 GMT) and landed 200 miles (nearly 322 km) downrange, researchers said.

A team of 60 scientists and students representing Cornell, the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Southwest Research Institute, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Oslo participated in the study.

For those complaining, as always, about the lack of a photo, just click where it says: "[Photos of the rocket launch and aurora]" Is that too difficult???

I think it's the reading part that stumps 'em. Some people see an article more than two paragraphs long and no immediate photo and they panic. AHHHHH! I'm actually going to have move the mouse a fraction of an inch and click again! #$%$ you Yahoo, #$%$ you all to he!!.

I find this sorta interesting because just earlier in the month they were talking about the aurora lighting up when there was no type of solar activity that day to be predicted. How it had scientists scratching their heads. I suppose it was a really big itch, now they really wanna know why. Weather experiement? or just another way to cover their #$%$

Once again, the too lazy and the too stupid combine to complain about photos.

I thought they combined to create this post?

Where's my picture? Why do I have to read the stupid story to see what they're talking about? Why won't my 'puter 'splain it to me so I don't have to make any effort to find anything? Where's my bottle? Christ on a bicycle people READ the article, that's why it's called an article and not a PHOTO. If you have a modicum of sense you'll see the link then you can go ohhh and ahhh (or more likely #$%$ some more), over the pictures. Man the computer age is making some people so lazy and entitled.

Finally, an article about something other than sports, diets and celebrities. Ever notice how sparing science news is over the weekend? Though it would have been cooler if they'd waited until they got some results form the rocket to report what actually happened. Still, science theory wasn't proven in a day.

A picture would be nice. First, by the way! Nyah....

Kristian Birkeland discovered in 1903 that an electric charge flowed parallel to the Auroral formation. The fact that they are acknowledging electromagnetic activity is another step towards the Electric Universe hypothesis, but their ignorance of plasma physics once again has them putting the cart in front of the horse. Also, there is no mention as to what happens to this huge amount of energy that flows into the atmosphere. We know that energy cannot be destroyed, so are we to assume that it is "all used up" by this interaction? In an Electric Universe that energy continues to flow into the atmosphere and ultimately to the surface and interior of the Earth in an attempt to complete the circuit. We have discovered these current sheets that wrap around the planet (search; Red Sky in Kenya, Scotland's delight) which in turn drives weather patterns and climate. It is not a coincidence that the Earth experiences extreme weather leading up to and after CME's and other high energy events produced by the Sun.

the story of the rocket is amazing - is this what we spend millions of dollars to find out ?
