James Gunn, director of the upcoming sci-fi rollercoaster "Guardians of the Galaxy," let fans in on how it feels to finish a big budget movie.
Posting to his Facebook page on June 28, Gunn covered a changed attitude to other perfectionist directors, the final tweaks planned for "Guardians" in post-production, and his affection for the gun-toting Rocket Racoon voiced by Bradley Cooper.
"I'm starting to get very sad every time I think of how I'm going to miss all of the people I've been working with side-by-side for the past two years," he wrote.
"And -- to show you how strange I really am -- I get teary-eyed when I think of how I won't be working with Rocket (at least for a little while). He's been the center of my life for a long time now, and I've come to love the little son-of-a-bitch. Really," he continued.
Gunn, whose previous theatrical gigs were vigilante comedy "Super" and off-kilter horror "Slither," has been propelled into the Hollywood spotlight after agreeing to helm "Guardians of the Galaxy" for Marvel.
"I've gotten angry with filmmakers like Ridley Scott and George Lucas who can't let go of their old films and want to keep going back and offering up different versions, but I can easily see myself doing that now," was his opening line, admitting that letting go of "Guardians" was proving a hard task, and thanking the Marvel producers who would have to "tear this movie from my bloody grip."
With its central cast consisting of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Cooper and Dave Bautista, the film has supporting characters supplied by the likes of John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro and Karen Gillan.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is due July 31 in the UK and Ireland, Brazil, Chile, the Philippines and Singapore.
Openings in the US, Canada, and eastern and northern Europe follow on August 1, with Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand audiences receiving "Guardians" the week of August 7 and central and western Europe receiving the movie from August 13.
