Romney Advisers Helped the White House Draft Health Care Reform

Romney Advisers Helped the White House Draft Health Care Reform

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama never met to discuss the federal health care law, but Romney's advisers did.  New records reviewed by NBC News's Michael Isikoff point out that "White House officials had a dozen meetings in 2009 with three health-care advisers and experts who helped shape the health care reform law signed by Romney in 2006."  One meeting, NBC News reports, "was in the Oval Office and presided over by Barack Obama."  Jon Gruber, one of the advisers who attended the Obama meeting, said that the White House "really wanted to know how we can take that same approach we used in Massachusetts and turn that into a national model." Especially in light of Perry's recent "Romney Remedy" ad, Romney is distancing himself from Gruber like an embarrassing ex, as aides have tried to suggest Gruber wasn't a really an adviser to Romney. However, as Isikoff writes, Gruber was "personally recognized by Romney when the governor signed the health-care bill into law" as well as "appointed by Romney as a board member to the Connector Authority."  Gruber himself has a few, possibly damaging, words for Romney:

I think he is the single person most responsible for health care reform in the United States. … I’m not trying to make a political position or a political statement, I honestly feel that way. If Mitt Romney had not stood up for this reform in Massachusetts … I don’t think it would have happened nationally. So I think he really is the guy with whom it all starts.”

No wonder the media is trying so hard to push the narrative that somehow, if Perry doesn' t win this debate tonight, he is somehow through. I'm not impressed with Perry's debating skills and his positions on illegals getting in-state college tuition either. But this debate doesn't crown Romney.

I pray it crowns someone else. Cain or Paul. The way it looks, it will be Obama in 2012

is history about to repeat itself? did not we just have a Republican Presidental candidate who worked well with all Democrats........McCain.....both are RINOS.
Perry is a lose canon with some very screwed up ideas. I only hope Cain is a real conservative. lets not trade one liberal for another liberal in Elephant clothing....i am pretty disappointed in the Republicans running. but the bottom line is a Republican will be President in 2013. the Vice Presidental pick better be a true conservative in the Tea Party mold or there will be trouble brewing in 2013 for the GOP!! Republicans better not think they are not going to be voted out either if they screw up!!

i guess the blame Bush thing did not work out so now Mitt? lol!! Obama took a look at Romneys plan and liked it. they took his ideas and went national with it. Obama all along had Healthcare revisions plans as his legacy............the blame for Obamacare is not Mitt Romney. Romneys plan is a disaster and so will be Obamacare. both need to be repealed.

No, no one is blaming Mitt. They are saying that advisers to Mitt helped with the National Health Care law signed by Obama. Mitt is lying to the people by trying to distance himself from it. When you are a governor, you gotta stand behind the bills you sign. If not, then why did you sign it in the first place? Sounds like poor decision making to me, someone we definitely do not need at this time in the White House...

Just one of the reasons why Romney has trouble closing the deal, is always stuck at approval ratings of around 25%. Another is that he made his money in Private Equity - shorthand for buying companies, looting them by cutting or exporting jobs and then reselling them. Exactly what people are angry about.

Really ?? I thought companys like mc donalds was still in our country along with many others that mitt romney only helped get started .are you listening to gossip and just repeating what you heard ??? shame ..we really should be informed on the facts before we vote

Um Jenny Mitt did not help McDs "get started". It was founded in 1955 by Ray Kroc in southern CA.

Good fodder for tonights debate. With Perry self destructing and Herman Cain on the rise it could get interesting.

        exactly

I hope Perry and Romney advisors got economists to evaluate Cain's 9-9-9 plan. Otherwise Perry is done.
      • Scottinsd1 7 mths ago
That's humorous - Cain doesn't stand a chance, and you know it. He actually believes that the jobless should just "get jobs and stop complaining", and he also believes that black folks aren't discriminated against in the US. The guy is utterly delusional, just like the rest of the GOP circus.

Big difference. Romney did not force his citizens to buy health care or face a penalty, nor did he infringe on private health carriers by persuading/forcing them to go to public carriers.
    • Marcy  •  7 mths ago
Whether you are for or against health care, Republican or Democrat, this is the type of behavior that has got to end. Our elected officials should not be sneaking around behind closed doors and lying to us about what they are doing. Didn't the people say they wanted government transparency? How about people who do what they say they are going to do? People who actually tell the truth and believe what they say? This is a prime example of what is wrong with our country right now.
      • Warren 7 mths ago
uh, are you missing the point in the story Marcy? as i said up there, our President sought out experience with what could have been a stronger and better bill had it NOT been for the GOP, but the point really is he sought out HELP, and from the GOP governor at that time....THAT is leadership, like it or not.
      • Brian 7 mths ago
I agree with Warren; one of the things I was hoping for in Washington is more bipartisanship, even if it is only behind the scenes, and making sure that good ideas are incorporated no matter who comes up with them. This story says that was happening, which is a good thing (and increasingly rare in the last 11 years).
      • nick j 7 mths ago
Obama sought the advise of Romney's health care advisers. It wasn't Romney. Romney has firmly opposed a national healthcare plan, this was ALL Obama.
    • Stark4090  •  7 mths ago
What is it about Romney that repels voters?
    • socal  •  7 mths ago
We want Bob Dole! We want Bob Dole! Doooooole!!
Wait--he is still alive, isn't he?
      Norm Macdonald for VP.

There is a difference between state required insurance and federal mandated insurance... you can always move out your state.
Leaving your native or home country is not so realistic.
Knowone has challenged the constitutionality of state required health insurance.

Its bi-partisanship! Oh no! We can't have that!

You will have to work under the table and not report tips because they will take it right out of your check!

Romney signed the Mass healthcare bill that was crafted by the same guys that gave Obama advice for Obamacare. Those advisors screwed up Mass and now they screwing up the entire country. Those advisors need to be found out and sent back to Cuba or whatever messed up country they came from.

oh and by the way Rev.Bimbo, Wall Street was bailed out on Bush's watch if you would recall correctly. Remember how McCain skipped a debate and ran back to D.C. in support of this bill too as I recall...it had most of the backing of both parties.
    • Fred  •  7 mths ago
So basically...BO is too stupid to think up his own idea so he needs a smart white guys idea to steal. When the deal blows up, it's the smart whites guys fault. DAM, liberals are just too much!!
    • K  •  7 mths ago
Is any of the major candidates honest? I really doubt it! Point, they are all crooks, just don`t let the biggest crooks run everything,re-elect NONE!
    • .  •  7 mths ago
Romney is not much better than Obama... Sean Duffy for Vice President.
Rick Perry is not to bright but I would take Cain or Perry or Romney
