Romney campaign calls Obama outsourcing ad 'a lie'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney's campaign is accusing President Barack Obama of being dishonest.

Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie pushed back Thursday against Obama commercials that depict the former Massachusetts governor as someone who shipped jobs overseas as a private venture capitalist. Gillespie called the charge from the Obama camp "a lie."

In an interview on NBC's "Today," Gillespie said there wasn't any evidence Romney outsourced jobs when he was head of Bain Capital.

"When a president doesn't tell the truth, how can we trust him to lead?" Gillespie asked.

That same question is part of a hard-hitting new television ad the Romney campaign will be running in battleground states. The ad says Obama's attacks on Romney are misleading, unfair and untrue.

The ad tries to show that dishonesty is a pattern with Obama and points to his 2008 Democratic primary rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, to do it. It shows a clip of Clinton saying, "Shame on you, Barack Obama."

Gillespie said Romney left Bain Capital in 1999, and said job outsourcing wasn't the policy when Romney was in charge. That accusation, Gillespie said, has "been shown to be demonstrably false."
