Romney dominates NH poll, well ahead of Perry

EXETER, N.H. (AP) — Mitt Romney may be tightening his grip on New Hampshire voters, despite tremendous buzz surrounding Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the nation's first presidential primary state and elsewhere.

The former Massachusetts governor now leads his nearest rival, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, by 27 points among likely New Hampshire voters, according to a Suffolk University-7News poll released Wednesday night. Perry finished far back, earning 8 percent compared with Romney's 41 percent. Paul took 14 percent and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman received 10 percent to round out the top four finishers.

Suffolk reported a 4.9-point margin of error in the survey of 400 likely GOP primary voters taken Sept. 18 to 20.

It was the first nonpartisan poll focused on New Hampshire since Perry formally joined the race almost six weeks ago. In recent weeks, he has been considered the GOP frontrunner after top finishes in several nationwide polls. But winning the Republican nomination usually depends on performances in individual states.

Perry has devoted considerable time and energy to New Hampshire so far, having already made three separate trips here. Earlier Wednesday, his campaign released an endorsement list of 27 state representatives. And he has consistently drawn large crowds.

But the energy hasn't translated into strong poll numbers in a state that allows Republicans and Independents to participate in the GOP primary. The New Hampshire primary date has yet to be set but is likely five months away.

Perry's finish far behind Romney surprised some local Republicans, who have seen strong interest in Perry's campaign.

"If you just made assumptions based on the buzz about Perry, you would have thought he would have been neck and neck with Romney. This is pretty shocking to me," said Jamie Burnett, an uncommitted adviser who led Romney's New Hampshire operation four years ago.

But Burnett also said many Republicans described Perry's performance at a recent event as "underwhelming."

Romney enjoys natural advantages in New Hampshire. He was the governor of a neighboring state and has a summer home on a lake in the central part of the state. The Perry campaign highlighted Wednesday's new endorsements and said the Texas governor would continue to be "a frequent visitor" to New Hampshire.

"Some of those in the race have been running for president virtually full time for many years," Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan said. "After just six weeks as a presidential candidate, Governor Perry's pro-jobs, conservative message is dominating the national agenda and laying the groundwork for defeating President Obama."

Suffolk pollster David Paleologos suggested that pundits may need to re-think the conventional wisdom that the presidential contest has turned into a two-man race.

"Mitt Romney is saying 'get out of my backyard' and making New Hampshire his strong firewall despite showing some weakness in the other states' early primaries," said Paleologos, director of Suffolk University's Political Research Center. "The anti-Romney candidate at this point could be either Ron Paul, who has polled consistently over the past year, or Jon Huntsman, whose numbers are really growing in the Granite State."

Another New Hampshire-based GOP operative cautioned against reading too much into one poll.

"One poll is meaningless," said Michael Dennehy, an uncommitted Republican who led Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign four years ago. "One needs a series of good poll numbers to indicate a strong connection with voters."

Way to go New Hampshire. We hope you keep your "boots to the neck" of this cocky cowboy governor and point him back in the direction of Texas. The rest of us appreciate your effort to take this election seriously...after all, we are electing a president for the United States of America and not senior class clown.

Perry will flame out quickly, just like all of the previous Tea Party favorites (Huckabee, Palin, Trump, Bachmann, etc). I'm just waiting to see who the next loon is that they put up on a pedestal. The GOP needs to take back firm control of the Republican party, or the Tea Party extremists will destroy them.

I am a native Texan and here are a few things about Rick Perry:
Please take the time to read the article “Perry Mines Texas System to Raise Cash for Campaigns” in the New York Times, published August 20, 2011. Also take a look into the relationship between Rick Perry and Houston builder Bob Perry and Harold Simmons builder of the low level radioactive waste dump near Austin. Please also take time to read "Perry Donor's Radioactive Waste Site Deal Scrutinized" by Peter Overby on NPR.org. It all makes for some very interesting reading.
Questions have arisen about Perry’s actions surrounding the execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in 2004. Please take time to look into "The Texas Innocents Project", to date 44 individuals have been exonerated through their efforts, many who were sitting on Death Row. Yet Perry is sure that no innocent individuals were executed here in Texas.
Thanks to Perry the schools here are ranked 47th and there is a multi-billion dollar deficit (approximately $4-billion) in the state's educational system that his policies created. He was
warned by the then Republican State Comptroller 5-years ago that his tax cuts were going to cause the problem that Texas schools are going through right now. Most local school districts are facing huge budget deficits some in the multi-million dollar range and are laying off staff and teachers and most will have to raise local property taxes just to cover these shortfalls.
There is a looming $27-billion deficit due next year for the state's budget that is not being talked about nationally but we in Texas are painfully aware of it. Back in April Perry took just under $28-billion in Federal stimulus money of that $6.4-billion was used to help pay this years state deficit. This and the redirection of the $4-billion from Texas education funds allowed the $9.1-billion State Rainy Day Fund, that Rick Perry controls, to go untouched.
As for job creation here in Texas, take a long look at the types of jobs that Perry claims to have "created". For the most part these hare minimum wage or lower jobs and many are part-time and Texas has the highest number of people on food stamps. Companies are moving to Texas because of tax breaks and because Texas is a right-to-work state. He is not creating new jobs merely shifting jobs from other states.
He tried to take private land here through eminent domain so that a Spanish company, Cintra could build the Trans-Texas Corridor, a super transportation system that has since been canceled when a number if issues arose about the project. More and more of the new highways build here in Texas are toll-roads, one the latest is the State Highway 121 project in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, another controversial tollroad project involving Cintra. Cintra would have the right to collect tolls on the road for 50-years. A lot of questions were raised when it came out that the North Texas Tollway Authority was preventing from bidding on this project. A number of unanswered questions about Perry's relationship with Cintra are surfacing now and I am sure will require answers during the presidential campaign.
A lot of questions are being raised about Perry's motives regarding the controversial decision to require 6th-grade girls to be vaccinated for HPV. Many of these questions centered on his financial relationship with Merck. And now there are questions being raised about his relationship with Novartis Pharmaceuticals another drug-manufacturer that has contributed heavily to the Republican Governors Association, a major backer of Rick Perry's campaigns.
These are just a few issues that are being raised during the vetting process and it is doubtful that he will be able to survive the scrutiny of the national press. As we in Texas have found out, Rick Perry is not who he purports to be. Please take the time to really learn about him before you make up your mind.

Good for New Hampshire! Sounds like they're full of pretty reasonable, intelligent folks.

The "buzz" has been created by TV pundits. No one likes Perry. He might as well drop out if he can't even do well in NH after the time and money he has spent there.

Romney or Perry? It's like the doctor asking you: "Would you like the needle or the suppository?"

If Mitt can't dominate this poll he is toast. As he moves closer to Perry though he will start getting slammed like Perry did in the last debate.

Ron Paul would beat Romney with all the democrats and independents voting for him. Besides these polls are skewed.

      Ron Paul 2012

Perry, it's not government's duty to create jobs. You sound like Obama; something you would probably call a socialist. You make jobs part of your campaign because that is what America needs. What you going to do to create jobs?

Don't listen this hypocrite; he'll say anything to get votes, just like all these other politicians.

There is only one true statesman who abides by the constitution......................Ron Paul!!!

Paul is a pro-gun, anti-abortion, isolationalist throwback whose Puritanical, ninteenth century values would lead to irreversible chaos. I can see why the fringe, anarchistic right supports the old vagina sniffer.

No more globalist puppets! Ron Paul 2012! End the fed! Stop the tyranny from banks and the US federal government! People, please do NOT enlist or work for the federal government, you are only helping to grow the tyranny! Stop selling out you cheap fools! If you truly want to serve your country, do NOT enlist. Fighting six (!) manufactured wars in the middle east is not severing your country, it is serving special interests, those being bankers and large corporations. By enlisting you are facilitating the destruction of the sovereign nation that you swore an oath to protect. Friends don't let friends sell out to the government.
