Romney: Gingrich didn't earn millions as historian

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says Newt Gingrich's freshly released contract with mortgage giant Freddie Mac shows that he was not merely a historian as he first suggested.

Romney is charging during Monday night's GOP debate that the former House speaker made millions as an "influence peddler."

Romney says that companies don't spend that much money for history lessons and that Gingrich's time since leaving office has been spent trading on his connections. Gingrich is adamant that he never lobbied.

Gingrich says that his consulting firms made that money, not him personally. He says his annual share was only about $35,000 and that the accusations he lobbied are defamatory and false.

He's repeatedly denying it, but Gingrich was in fact lobbying for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

        How do you know?

Mitt said so; but Mitt also says he lies. Mitt says he's proud to lie if it gets him votes. Remember; he said that about six weeks ago for misquoting the Prez on his first TV Attack ad?

Richie- that wasn't a misquote. That was incorrect context.

Of course, Newt will deny being a lobbyist, because he wasn't registered to do so. Whether he made hundreds of thousands or his "consulting firm" did doesn't matter. The money was paid for a reason and it sure wasn't Newt's abilities as a historian.

I totally agree... after all, the $25,000/month Newt got is just about average for historians, isn't it?
Nonsense... he was influence peddling, not giving history lessons, and although that IS capitalism, it still makes him a downright liar... and his repentance and change a bit fraudulent. It's the same Newt.... not an amended one, IMHO

I have a history professor brother-in-law who is pretty outraged that Gingrich would have the brass cajonies to claim that salary as a historian.

For once I agree with Romney! I've never seen a work of history by Newt. But we all know that Newt sure is one work of art; pornographic art!

It is a well kept secrect that Newt wasn't really a historian for freddie, also the same reason Newt was endorsed by Chuck Norris. Newt was paid for being the secret member of the delta force.

Here is the problem: America is not made of entirely (wealthy) business people or (wealthy) top-level government servants (ha) which is what Gingrich, Romney, Obama believe (or just want to believe). This is how they see the world. What about the teachers, the factory workers, farmers, regular people doing regular jobs? They have ZERO representation. These elections are much more about a power grab and the business interests they represent than it is running the Government. The UNITED STATES of America is NOT a CORPORATION. WE THE PEOPLE.

This is the best we can come up to represent the U.S top office. a Multimillionaire who wants to add the white house to his RE collection, a porn star wannabe, an extreme right wing space cadet and M.I.A Dr Ernest. Makes our current man in the white house exonorable for his past misgivings..

Do these people really think the American voter is so stupid that we will vote for people that spend their debates "jabbing" at each other instead of talking about what they will do if elected?

Obama & Republican "side show" - do you want to win in 2012 - get REAL with the American voter about what really has to be done to dig America out of this "hole"?

The majority of voters realize that we need a fiscal CONSERVATIVE who is also a social MODERATE that would balance the budget without throwing "grandma" under the train.

A candidate that would have the "GUTS" to lead Congress in across the board budget cuts INCLUDING the Pentagon and social programs. These cuts could be achieved without affecting the "troops on the ground" or people truly in need of assistance.

Cuts would need to be made to all administrative agency budgets, duplicate programs, "perks" for high ranking officers/officials, tighten eligibility rules, cut "pie in the sky" research projects and prosecute fraud.

A candidate that would have the "GUTS" to lead Congress in tax reform and sensible tax increase to pay down the debt NOT to maintain/increase current
      level of spending.
