Romney: 'I'm not concerned about the very poor'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he's "not concerned about the very poor" because they have an "ample safety net" and he's focused instead on relieving the suffering of middle-class people hit hard by the bad economy.

In comments likely to become fodder for his critics, Romney emphasized, "You can focus on the very poor, that's not my focus."

He brought up the subject of the poor in a CNN interview marking his big win in Florida's GOP primary Tuesday night, a major step toward becoming the party's challenger to President Barack Obama in the fall. A multi-millionaire former venture capitalist, Romney has been criticized by Democrats and his Republican rivals alike for earlier remarks seen as insensitive, such as saying "I like being able to fire people" and declaring that he knew what it was like to worry about being "pink-slipped" out of a job.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor." he said Wednesday. "We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich. They're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling."

Asked whether his comment about the poor might come across as odd to some, Romney reiterated.

"We will hear from the Democrat party the plight of the poor and there's no question, it's not good being poor, and we have a safety net to help those that are very poor," Romney said, adding that he's more worried about the unemployed, people living on Social Security and those struggling to send their kids to college.

"We have a very ample safety net and we can talk about whether it needs to be strengthened or whether there are holes in it. But we have food stamps, we have Medicaid, we have housing vouchers, we have programs to help the poor," Romney said. "But the middle-income Americans, they're the folks that are really struggling right now."

This guy isn't concerned about the middle class or the poor: he's concerned about his own class, and that's all he cares about. He's ultra-wealthy, and he's going to promote and preserve the interests of the ultra-wealthy, period.

So the "very poor" have a safety net? #$%$ does that mean? That it's okay to be poor? This man has no concept of what it means to be poor. It has little to do with lack of money and more to do with how it eats away at your soul. This man is a world-class douche-bag.
      • Corky 3 mths ago
I agree James. The people who have never experienced poverty have no idea of the pain you get because you can't even afford some essentials for your children. You ask any kid who has the free school lunch. They are ashamed and so is the parent who has to ask for it. Some people can afford to buy their kids cars on their 16th birthday. A poor family may not be able to buy their child a new pair of shoes.
It eats away your soul alright.

I wonder how many poor people he created when BANE raided those companies and fired all those people. Oh, it make sense! He doesn't care about the poor. Well, at least he is consistent.
    • Werner  •  3 mths ago
When he said that he does not care about the Poor, that was just a sudden uncontrollable attack of truthfulness.
But don't worry, GOPlers, they will make sure that that won't happen again. All the rest he said was directed already by his campaign consultants, trying to save him from the image disaster.
In the future you will hear from him only the usual lying and hypocritical GOP brainwashing for rednecks.

Romney has shown his faith in the safety net. He put a lot of people there during his time at Bain.

Not so certain about that; nonetheless, Mitt is a class-A douche.

Whew! I'm so relieved about Romney's lack of concern for the poor. I was kind of worried since I cannot work, have NO income and my wife makes a whopping $6,000 a year (roughly what Mitt spends on hair care each month). Remind me Mitt, where are all these safety nets? I'm curious since we DO NOT qualify for ANY state, federal or local health care. We also CANNOT afford to see a Dr. to renew our prescriptions or even to purchase ALL the meds we need. I'm supposed to be on insulin for severe diabetes and I'm literally dying of kidney damage from the disease (stage 4 of 5, less than 30% kidney function). I'm so happy you found a way to get universal health care though for the citizens of Mass. Why can't this be accomplished FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY? Oh, I forgot, us poor are doing just fine, that's right ;)

This is a great example of the disconnect between the Republicans in office or the current group running compared to the American public and "real" republicans. Real republicans saw Obama as someone they were scared of at first, but now feel comfortable with him after seeing first hand that he is very moderate. Although everyone hoped things would be better at this point, many of them see the obstructionism from the republican party as being as responsible, if not more responsible, for the slow pace of the economic recovery. Most real republicans want the government to work together, instead of playing games with the country's political process. Listening to the talking heads on TV makes you forget that most people are reasonable and will change their opinions when faced with new information.

I volunteer at a homeless shelter and I'll tell you right now, what he calls a safety net is neither a net or safe. Many of these people need to be in a mental health institution or at the very least, some outpatient psychiatric care. Mental health is keeping many of these folks from keeping a job or taking basic care of themselves.

Someone had better begin to work for the middle class before it disappears entirely. The rich and the poor do have their safety net; the middle class does not. The middle class is being taxed, exported, and government mandated out of existence

Big clue for Romney, the "very poor" do NOT comprise just 4-5% of our population. They comprise about 30% of our population and their numbers are growing everyday thanks to his party's laws and policies supported by their rigid adherence to "free market" capitalism.

Oh, and that safety net? Shredded a decade ago by mean-spirited, self-centered, narrow-minded Republicans. How's that repealing of Obamacare working out for you, Republicans? How about your calls to do away with Social Security and give all that money to Wall Street? How's that working out for ya, Republicans?

Have any of you actually lived and worked with the "poor?" The people who have child after child to collect checks on them? The third and fourth-generation Welfarites? Those who consistently scam the system but refuse to work because they make more in welfare? I have and you can all stop crying for them. They are doing a lot better than most people who work for a living and wonder how their bills are going to get paid.

Here's the problem: We have a real mess today! The people that created "most" of it. are still in office........ and they are now saying, "we're going to fix it"... I don't think so!!!!! WE NEED "NEW" BLOOD, NOT THE SAME OLD LEFTOVERS.... THEY "ARE" OUR PROBLEM!!!

I know a single grandmother, 51, and not able to work. There are days she crawls because she can't walk, ruptured/herniated discs. She gets $647 a month, and $114 in foodstamps. Her rent is $300, then electricity, $14 life line phone, water. She is also raising a 14 year old grandson. His parents are supposed to pay $25 a week, they are $500 behind now. Why doesn't Romney go explain all those "safety nets" to her, because she has missed them.
