Romney Joins Fight on Contraception Rule

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – With the U.S. economy improving and social conservative Rick Santorum on the rise, Mitt Romney homed in Monday on contraception, an issue he has rarely discussed on the stump.

At a high school in this Denver suburb, Romney took aim at recent Obama administration regulations requiring women’s contraceptive services to be covered by insurance policies under the Affordable Care Act. The Catholic Church had sought a broad exemption for the many Catholic institutions in the country to recognize its canonical opposition to artificial birth control. Instead, the Department of Health and Human Services excluded only “religious employers” that primarily employ members of their own faith communities.

The exception protects those who work directly for Catholic churches, but not Catholic universities, hospitals or social-service agencies. Catholic bishops are pushing back on the issue, with some telling their parishes to “defend the faith” and others saying outright they won’t comply.

Although the White House has sought to point out that the policy does not require individuals to use or prescribe contraception, Romney charged it was an example of President Obama's war on religious liberty.

“Think what that does to people in faiths that do not share those views. This is a violation of conscience,” he said. “We must have a president who is willing to protect America's first right, our right to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience.”

He added, “The creator gave every human being his rights. I’m just distressed as I watch our president try and infringe upon our rights. The First Amendment of the Constitution provides the right to worship in the way of our own choice.”

The Obama campaign swiftly took issue with Romney's remarks, noting that since 2002, when Romney became Massachusetts’ governor, the state has required health plans to cover contraception on the same terms as other outpatient services, and offered the same religious exemption as the Obama administration.

“It's the ultimate hypocrisy that Mitt Romney is hitting the president for the same birth control policy he oversaw and protected as governor,” Obama's deputy campaign manager, Stephanie Cutter, said in a statement. “The problem for him is that women are on to him. The trust of voters is priceless in elections, and unfortunately for him it can’t be bought.”

Until now, Romney has generally avoided reproductive issues on the campaign trail. During a January debate, he brushed aside a question about whether he would support a state ban on the sale of contraceptive drugs and devices as a “silly” non-issue.

A Romney aide said subject was raised Monday because it has become part of current events. The aide referenced an editorial in the Washington Examiner earlier in the week, in which Romney wrote, “My own view is clear. I stand with the Catholic bishops and all religious organizations in their strenuous objection to this liberty- and conscience-stifling regulation.”

... will the oath of office will be taken with a hand on the Book of Mormon or the Holy Bible, do not play with "religion." One is to be reminded that no where in the Holy Scriptures does it command one to not marry, to pray to the Saints as prescribed by men as saints, or to the Blessed Mary. I will be glad when Jesus returns, I for one am tired of others telling me who is and who is not more righteous and then we will see for it is written that the last will be first, let me stop, I am...preaching. Feed the poor, care for the widow and orphan.

america is diverse, which means you can't make everyone happy.

it is the PEOPLES job to obey their religion and beliefs, not the governments job to enforce it. at the end of the day, people have the choice whether or not to take birth control..obama is not shoving the pills down catholics throats.

however, to deny birth control to people who want it and can't afford it is dumb. the last thing we need is more unwanted babies who we can't afford to feed, clothe, bath, vaccinate, etc. this is a step towards responsible parenting and whether or not you will be taking advantage of it, the idea should be applauded.

        you are on point.

No one is forcing women to use birth control or even a forcing the a Catholoic doctor to perscribe it, just that insurance cover it. There are no religious freedoms being stepped on here. From an insuracne standpoint birth control is a lot cheaper that the cost of a baby.

Two items..., first Romney approved a similar policy when he was Gov., in MA. Second, the Catholic should be much more concerned with declining membership and Pedophile Priests!!

Thumbs up eventhough you ended up naming threeinstead of 2 issues:
        1) first Romney approved a similar policy when he was Gov
        2) Second, the Catholic should be much more concerned with declining membership
        3) Third the Catholic should be much more concerned with Pedophile Priests!!

I think that the 3rd one ia MAJOR issue. Any other institution with so many perverts would have been banned.

RJ you should be concerned with knowing about an instution before commenting on what it should be concerned about.

I can't believe it's 2012 and people still care about whether someone use contraception. Wake up Catholics and look at your religion through objective lenses. You'll see that it's all made up.

I suppose it's bad for birth control to be paid for by insurance companies. We can't have that. But by God, it's important for Viagra to be covered. Really???
      • nick 3 mths ago
I'm pretty sure Viagra isn't covered by most plans though

Too bad they aren't questioning these "health" plans paying for Viagra!!! Bunch of hypocrites.

Why is it that conservatives are not so energized about protecting the rights of non Christian or Jewish religions? It's OK to deny Muslims the right to build a mosque. The real ambition is to make America a Christian nation.

You can tell how hateful a Christian conservative is (or how phony a make believe politician like Newt) by how much venom is in his voice when he spits out the word secular.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
Why is it that conservatives are not so energized about protecting the rights of non Christian or Jewish religions? Because these groups do not need protection, They already have it. The only persecuted faith in the civilized world is the Christian faith.
      • Jack 3 mths ago
Mitt Nd gingrich play up to the weak minded to get a few votes. They have already handed Obama a victory on a silver platter.
      • Lee 3 mths ago
Yeah, right, Christians are so persecuted. I'll believe that when there hasn't been a Christian president in over a 100 years and when most of Congress isn't Christian. Christianity the only faith I know of that whines about being 'persecuted' when they can't force their faith on others. By the way, exactly what planet do you live on?

Unless all Catholics have fertility problems they are using birth control. Where are the ten and eleven kid Catholic families these days?
    • Randy  •  Mineola, Texas  •  3 mths ago
This war on religion rhetoric is ridiculous and simple fear mongering for the masses. Of course we need to preserve the right to worship or not worship in our own way. What that means is, if your religion teaches that contraceptives are wrong, then don't buy them or use them. However many if not most religions do not have a stand on the issue, other than it's a personal choice. So for those who wish to buy and use contraceptive products, they should certainly have the right to do so, and have it covered by their healthcare plan. It's pretty simple folks, either do it or don't but respect the rights of each individual to make that choice.

Have anyone notice the same issues keep coming up that have been in politics for years
Homosexuality & abortion. And they never explain in detail, how they will deal with the real issues, like balance budget, jobs & a sound economy.
    • Jennifer  •  3 mths ago
So "God" has told christians specifically in the bible that women (and men) are not to use birth control? So why don't all catholic families have 20+ kids? If women don't want birth control, then don't use it. But it should be covered and available to all women.
    • Robert  •  3 mths ago
How can you actually take a person like this seriously?Pandering to the right wing religious nut bags is a pathetic sign of desperation. How does anyone in their right mind think handing out contraceptives is wrong.
    • Nelson  •  Monacillo, Puerto Rico  •  3 mths ago
I'm catholic. But just as employers must deduct SS and other payroll taxes, this is another mandate. The law allows the religious institutions to meet employees needs. Let's face, anyone married for over 20 yrs and has two or three kids, is using contraception.
    • queen isabel  •  Wetumpka, Alabama  •  3 mths ago
i guess they think catholics don't use birth control pills,,,,WRONG,,,,,
    • Becca  •  Laramie, Wyoming  •  3 mths ago
The government is not forcing people to take contraceptives, they are just making them available to everyone! If I was an insurance company, I would much rather pay for birth control pills than a birth. I started taking my birth control pills due to other health issues. Yes, I do also enjoy the benefits of not getting pregnant as my fiance and I do not want children, but they mainly make me feel much better and not have so much trouble once a month.
    • Jennifer  •  3 mths ago
So let me get this straight... I'm 42, fighting stage 4 cancer, I've been advised by my dr to make sure that I do not get pregnant under any circumstances right now. The cancer treatments could seriously injure a fetus, and the cancer could very easily spread to the fetus. And Catholics would tell me I'm sinning because I'm using birth control? No thanks.
    • L.  •  3 mths ago
This is being gleefully blown out of proportion by the right wing. If you don't want to provide complete health care for women employees, fine. Just stop accepting federal aid and tax exemptions. Fair, right? Funny that they have always covered Viagra!
