Romney looks to squelch Santorum's late rise

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — Mitt Romney hopes his presidential campaign hasn't ignored Rick Santorum's aggressive attacks for too long, as caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota on Tuesday could reshuffle the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Santorum largely bypassed Florida and Nevada to blanket the two caucus states with criticism of Romney and lay the groundwork among conservatives who have great sway in the process. Rival Newt Gingrich praised Santorum's strategy as shrewd even as he signaled he had no interest in exiting the four-way race, which also includes Ron Paul.

"I think that Santorum's going to have a pretty good day," Gingrich told reporters on the eve of the caucuses. "He targeted differently than I did. I stayed in Florida to fight it out. ... He took the same amount of time and energy and he came to Minnesota and Missouri and Colorado. For him, that was the right decision."

Missouri's GOP primary, also scheduled for Tuesday, promised Republicans a chance to show their allegiance to a candidate, but the effort is largely for show. No delegates will be awarded based on the outcome of the primary vote. Instead, Missouri will select delegates through a system of GOP caucuses and conventions that starts with local caucuses in mid-March. Moreover, Gingrich failed to get on the ballot in Missouri, which meant the vote there couldn't be read as a referendum on the former House speaker's viability.

Santorum, who for weeks has hammered Romney and Gingrich, seemed optimistic at his final campaign event before the contests got under way.

"This is a big day for us to see whether all the work that we put in in the past few weeks, when not so much attention was paid here as to Florida and Nevada, pays off," Santorum said at a Denver rally.

Santorum seemed to spare Gingrich after the former House speaker suffered back-to-back losses to Romney in Florida and Nevada. With stepped-up intensity, Santorum castigated Romney as an unfit candidate and warned that Republicans were heading toward defeat if Romney were the nominee.

"A Romney nomination would not be in the best interest of us wining the general election and we need to have a conservative alternative. And my feeling is that Speaker Gingrich sort of had his chance in the arena and came up short in Florida and Nevada," Santorum told reporters in Golden on Monday. "And now it's our turn hopefully to get a one-on-one in Missouri."

Romney sensed a possible threat from Santorum on Monday and went after Santorum's time in the Senate as "not effective" because of his past support for spending on pork-barrel projects. Santorum flatly countered that Romney was "uniquely unqualified."

Clearly mindful of the late shift in the race, Santorum has been working aggressively in Minnesota and in conservative areas of Colorado in the past two weeks while Romney campaigned in Florida and Nevada. It was clear Monday that Santorum saw an opportunity to rise in the GOP race.

But he was also facing coordinated criticism from Romney's headquarters for the first time.

"Any time someone challenges Gov. Romney, Gov. Romney goes out and instead of talking about what he's for ... he just simply goes out and attacks and tries to destroy," Santorum said.

This is a classic example of money talks and #$%$ walks. Romney's PAC will carpet bomb Santorum and the voters will buy the propaganda. For some reason, negative ads work better than ones about what you actually believe in or will do if elected. We the voters only have ourselves to blame. We buy this stuff and vote these people in and then wonder why nothing gets better. As long as we continue to purchase the snake oil, the snake oil producers will continue to supply us with it.

Santorum has had a free pass from Romney up to this point, while Santorum is running around crying that Romney is "uniquely unqualified" and so forth. Santorum wants it both ways - he wants to rip on Romney, but Romney can't say anything about Santorum. Sorry, but if you play with the bull, you're going to have to deal with the horns. Santorum has been unscrutinized by the media, and Romney and Gingrich have each laid off because Santorum has been no threat. If Santorum starts to win anything, he'll have to deal with opposition campaigns just like the other contenders. And another thing, if Santorum can't deal with the very little Romney has thrown his way, how on earth does he think he's going to do against Obama's machine? Santorum is fair game for criticism, just as much as any other candidate. His positions will be scrutinized, and commented upon by Romney and others if Santorum begins to win delegates, and that's fair game. It's necessary. Romney and Gingrich have each had to deal with a ton of heat from all directions, and if Santorum wants to truly compete, he'll have to do the same. He knows it, too. He's just trying to inoculate himself as much as possible before Romney really starts to put on the heat.

It won't take much scrutiny to disqualify any of the four. They are all crooks, liars, and cheats in one way or another. Paul is probably a little nuttier than the rest, but it's close.

and tonight we learned that Romney has Invested $$$$$ big time in Goldman Sachs.the same wall street firm that got Bail-out Money!!!!..and has set His 5 sons up with a 100million trust fund!! which also has a lifetime gift Tax deduction of 10Million...no wonder he said He doesnt care about the Very poor..He was born with a Silver Spoon jammed down His throat..

Now I have a Question....If a child is Born in another country and Both parents are US citizens is that child Born granted same status? I know if Child is Born on a Military base they are..reason am asking is that Mitts Dad was conceived and Born In Mexico. neither Grandfather or grandmother were stationed on any US military base...I dont think Mitt knows who is His real Grandmother seeing Grandfather believed in Poligimy and had 4-5 wives!!!!...and today Mitts brother still lives in Mexico.plus Family owns large parcels of land there...records do show when they moved back too USA, Mitts Dad was 5yrs old!!! and this is a good one the US govt gave His Family 100,000 bucks to help them re-settle in the USA!!!!!

Someone once told me that if you want a nicer lawn than your neighbor's its the easiest thing in the world to do. And you don't have to spend a lot of time and effort tending to your own lawn either. Just go out and pour bleach on your neighbor's lawn.

That is the essence of the Republicans' strategy.

This is the Morman mentality, attack anyone who opposeses you, even your own people, the mormans want the white house pretty bad, that in itselve is a warning sign, this church wants to control the country of america, Why? their founder claims to have seen and spoke with Jesus himself while walkin in the woods, we are in for even more trouble if Romney gets in there, backwards is where we be going. back to where the rich control everything, and the millions of american who now have a chance, that chance will be taken away again. we don"t want that.
      • The Rod 3 mths ago
You poor uneducated dolt. Do you not realize that the rich have always been in charge? And they always will be, no matter who's in power. How do you think they get rich in the first place? GO GET A CLUE!

      • Gulder Roy 3 mths ago
Well, that is the idea. Give the rich guy a tax break and he will invest it in job creation. In Romney's case, he is investing it in creation of a job for himself.
      • The Rod 3 mths ago
I'd say he's doing a pretty good job of it too.

Have big glasses on rick, cause here comes the mud. Mr clean "lets not talk about my past" romney will be throwing anything he can at you trying to see if somthing will stick.
    • Caretaker  •  3 mths ago
Romney thinks he's best because of his business background. As CEO you can call the shots. All you have to do is get the Board of Directors on your side and implement your decision. You don't have to consult shareholders. In Politics you're bound by what you can get past Congress. Complete different kettle of fish.

Don't do it Mitt! Rick Santorum is even more hilarious than Newt Gingrich. Imagine the ratings if the GOP spends it's summer talking about the fall of Western civilization, rampant bestiality and the impending apocalypse.

Launch the bombers! It's time for a good ol' fashioned carpet bombing. I guess these new style Republicans never heard Reagan's rule: Never attack a fellow Republican.

Santorum's only strength is Mitt's weakness as a candidate.

Is this the same peace loving Christian that proposes he would bomb Iran if he were
president today? I'm confused, in one breath he talks about his faith in Christ and the next
breath he's ranting like a vicious animal named Hitler.

Romney just called up his blitzkrieg boys. Santorum will be Swiss Cheese by Friday. Must be nice to have 250 supporters that have unlimited pockets capable of pumping up several Super PACs. Oh well, most of us will never realize his "silver spoon" world. Oh yea, he will never understand our Middle Class American world either.

And the politcal comedy of errors escalates. Gotta give the medias credit for one thing, they have been providing all this entertainment for us.

Santorum's biggest problem is that almost nobody will vote for him. Otherwise, he has an excellent chance of winning.
    • Abdul Jurballz  •  3 mths ago
Are these guys just campaigning to win the presidency, or they campaigning to straighten out the nation?

I do not read much of the latter from the gop, not that I think Obama could accomplish anything else with 4 more years. He is no different than any some CEO - failed miserably, so give him his golden parachute and send him on his way.

He'll be fine; I do not think there has ever been a president that has died bankrupt and broken.
