Romney and Obama Are Both Big 'Star Trek' Fans

The two candidates running for President are huge dorks, according to the New York Times. In a piece highlighting the many ways Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are the same (grilled chicken! Harvard! Modern Family!), the part that stands out is their Star Trek fandom.

Obama's Trek fandom is fairly well documented. In April, Obama admitted to having a crush on Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series, and got his picture taken giving the Vulcan salute with the actress. Pay attention to the size of the President's smile in that picture. Clearly, he's a true Trekkie.

Romney's fandom is a bit harder to track. Romney calls himself a big Star Trek fan according to the Times, but doesn't go so far as to identify as a Trekkie. The one thing we could find linking Romney to Star Trek is from back in 2010, when one of the members of LMFAO accused Romney of using a "Vulcan grip" on him when they got into a scuffle on a Vancouver plane.

Either way, we're destined to put a Star Trek fan in the White House. Again. Here's a debate topic we would like to see the two spar over: whether they prefer Captain Kirk or Captain Picard.
