Romney raps GOP rivals' government backgrounds

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — If Mitt Romney is rattled by polls showing presidential rival Rick Santorum nipping at his heels, he didn't show it Monday at an outdoor rally with about 2,500 people.

The former Massachusetts governor stuck to his usual campaign speech, saying his experience running businesses and the 2002 Winter Olympics makes him best qualified to be president. He didn't mention Santorum or former House Speaker Newt Gingrich by name.

And his criticisms of President Barack Obama were familiar. Romney said Obama lacks crucial business experience and doesn't have enough faith in constitutional principles.

Obama "is slowly but surely turning us into a European-style welfare state," he said.

Romney's 25-minute speech in Mesa opened a week that he and his rivals will devote largely to fundraising. Romney plans to campaign Wednesday and Thursday in Michigan, where he was born. Arizona and Michigan hold Republican primaries on Feb. 28.

Polls show Santorum rising after his wins last week in caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota. Romney won Saturday's Maine caucuses.

Romney told the Mesa crowd that Texas Rep. Ron Paul was a doctor before entering Congress. But he said "the other guys have spent their life entirely in government."

He was referring to Gingrich and Santorum, both of whom spent about two decades in Congress.

"Let's not nominate somebody who has not run anything and has not been a leader," Romney said.

The crowd cheered, but Romney seemed rushed at times, and occasionally struggled to be heard above protestors chanting outside the amphitheater on a pleasantly cool evening.

Romney ran against Kennedy in 1994 and lost, so if he had won wouldn't he be a career politician?
      • OneVote 3 mths ago
More like a career campaigner. I think he has been trying to get in Washington since his lost to Kennedy.

This compassionate Christian conservative founded a charity that was actually a bit of a scam. In 2001, following up on a faith-based urban charity initiative around the 2000 GOP convention in Philadelphia, Santorum launched a charitable foundation called the Operation Good Neighbor Foundation. While in its first few years the charity cut checks to community groups for $474,000, Operation Good Neighbor Foundation had actually raised more than $1 million, from donors who overlapped with Santorum's political fund raising. Where did the majority of the charity's money go? In salary and consulting fees to a network of politically connected lobbyists, aides and fundraisers, including rent and office payments to Santorum's finance director Rob Bickhart, later finance chair of the Republican National Committee. When I reported on Santorum's charity for The American Prospect in 2006, experts told me a responsible charity doles out at least 75 percent of its income in grants, and they were shocked to learn the figure for Operation Good Neighbor Fund was less than 36 percent. The charity -- which didn't register with the state of Pennsylvania as required under the law --- was finally disbanded in 2007. Huffington Post

Mitt is just what the GOP Powers that Be are looking for. He's weak, he will do exactly what Grover and the GOP tell him to do. Just sit there and sign the Bills we send you. They don't want a leader; they want a puppet.
      • Jerry 3 mths ago
Exactly. They're a bunch of power hungry elites hell-bent on their OWN inventions.

they are all the same except Sancatorianum is a religious zealot with zero tolerance for other peoples beliefs.

Nonsense. Romney is clearly the most qualified and electable candidate.
He is no puppet as you claim. That assertion is flat out ignorant.

Did I hear that right? The second generation politician slammed Gingrich and Santorum for being in politics too long?
      • Gulder Roy 3 mths ago
Second generation wannabe politician. Romney really hasn't spent nearly as much time in government as Gingrich or Santorum because Romney could never win an election.
      • John 3 mths ago
It worries me that the peoples misguided frustration will get him elected this time around.

So wait, we're supposed to trust the guy who is funded by the wall st. banks we bailed out because the other guys are in the government that the wall st. banks paid off to bail them out?

Likewise, a so-called "leadership PAC" created by Santorum that was supposed to fund other Republicans instead seemed to mostly pay for the lifestyle of Santorum and those around him. My investigation of the America's Foundation PAC showed that only 18 percent of its money went to fund political candidates, less -- and typically far less -- than any other "leadership PACs." What America's Foundation did spend a lot on with what looked like everyday expenses, including 66 trips to the Starbucks in Santorum's then-hometown of Leesburg, Va., multiple fast-food outings and expenditures at Walmart, Target and Giant supermarkets. Campaign finance experts said the PAC's expenses -- paid for by donations from wealthy businessmen and lobbyists -- were "unconventional," at best and arguably not legal. Santorum also funded his large Leesburg "McMansion" with a $500,000 mortgage from a private bank run by a major campaign donor, in a program that was only supposed to be open to high-wealth investment clients in the trust, which Santorum was not, and closed to the general public. Its like governing Mass is some kind of real experience Willard, come off it you've got no real experience; you are just a corporate vulture!
    • Kurt  •  3 mths ago
He was governor of a state. Politician. He headed a corporate raider company as his business experience. Thinks $300000 isn't much money. Doesn't worry about the poor.
Gets his funding from Wall Street and large corporations. He thinks corporations are people. Now what could possibly go wrong if he is elected president?

Not that I think being a business man particularly qualifies one to president -- the last businessman president was Jimmy Carter and the one before that was Herbert Hoover -- but it infuriates me when Romney claims he was a businessman. Looting companies as a corporate raider is not what real businessmen do.

Romney has very little background in the government because nobody would elect him. It isn't because he hasn't tried. At least Santorum and Gingrich got elected.

Romney real experience is (a) being born rich, (b) putting his inherited wealth in a blind trust and letting professionals manage the money and (c) buying election as governor of Massachusetts where he fathered Obamacare.

I enjoy how Romney who has been running for President for nearly ten years now raps his opponents for being politicians and having experience holding public office.

Is Mitt a weak enough individual to keep Grover and the GOP happy? What they want is a figurehead President that they can easily manipulate. Someone who will just sit there and sign the bills they pass to him.

There is an Olympics every four years and they all seem to run just fine, in countries all around the world. An Olympics in the USA is just a lot easier than in most other countries because the USA already has a headstart on most of the infrastructure requirements.

In reality, Romney's money bought him a tokem position as head of olympics when he really didn't do anything but show up at a few cocktail parties.

He has a convenient memory lapse- the only reason he does not have gov't experience is that the voters rejected him. He has a losing record in his campaigns, first he lost to kennedy, which shows poor picking his battle. Then he was rejected by repubs in 2008. Why should a reject expect to win this time?
