Romney supports automatic hikes in minimum wage

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney renewed his support Wednesday for automatic increases in the federal minimum wage to keep pace with inflation, a position sharply at odds with traditional GOP business allies, conservatives and the party's senior lawmakers.

"I haven't changed my thoughts on that," the former Massachusetts governor told reporters aboard his chartered campaign plane, referring to a stand he has held for a decade.

He did not say if he would ask Congress to approve the change if he wins the White House this fall.

Congress first enacted federal minimum wage legislation in 1938 and has raised it sporadically in the years since. The last increase, approved in 2007, took effect in three installments and reached $7.25 an hour for covered workers effective July 24, 2009.

It has never been allowed to rise automatically, as Romney envisions.

Romney's chief rival for the nomination, Newt Gingrich, criticized Romney for the stance, pointing to previous periods of hyperinflation and saying it would end up costing way too much money. "That would be a very dangerous idea," Gingrich said.

Romney also drew criticism from the anti-tax Club for Growth. "Indexing the minimum wage would be an absolute job killer," the group's president, Chris Chocola, said in a statement. He called the proposal "anti-growth."

Organized labor generally supports increases in the minimum wage, and Romney's position could give him cross-over appeal among blue-collar Democrats in a general election campaign.

Republicans have generally opposed attempts to raise it, although in 1996, the GOP-controlled Congress passed an election-year increase that included a package of tax cuts for business and a subminimum wage to apply to new, younger employees.

At the time lawmakers were considering the 2007 legislation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce registered its disapproval.

"Any minimum wage increase will significantly affect the bottom line of the nation's small business owners," said Bruce Josten, the executive vice president for government affairs at the organization, which says it represents more than 3 million businesses and organizations across the country.

A spokesman for the organization declined to comment on Romney's statement.

The National Federation of Independent Business says on its website that it opposes any increase in the current federal minimum wage.

"Mandatory wage increases not only hurt small businesses, but their employees as well," the group says. "It has not been proven to reduce poverty or narrow the income gap and puts a stranglehold on America's top job creators: small businesses."

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, Michael Steel, said Congress' top Republican "is following the presidential campaign but has not been commenting on the individual candidates' specific proposals." Boehner opposed the most recent increase that passed Congress.

An aide to Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Romney's statement.

As a candidate for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, Romney said he supported minimum wage increases in line with inflation.

Five years ago, he said he liked the "idea of getting the political debate out and I like the idea of not having the huge jumps as we do now."

Apparently Mitt saw the 4000+ comments on the story about him not caring about the poor.

If there's one thing the GOP hates it's minimum wage laws. All corps. would rather we all were indebted to our corp. masters then have a strong working class. And the GOP says the left is waging class warfare.

The best way to have a strong economy is to have a well paid working class. Even Henry Ford understood this simple concept over a hundred years ago.

A strong economy, from the perspective of the capitalist class, is one where the capitalist bosses can MAXIMIZE profits and MINIMIZE wages...

Forget the minimum wage, What about going after all the companies that off shored well paying American Jobs with a hefty fine of a million dollars per job? That should make companies think twice about off shoring the well paying jobs

I find it funny that people think increasing the minimum wage is a bad idea or automatic increases in the federal minimum wage to keep pace with inflation is bad and will cost jobs. Other country do it for instance Australia has a minimum of $15.51 Australian an hour and has an independent commission called the Australian Fair Pay Commission which in charge of increasing the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation. People who say the minimum wage cost jobs is also wrong as Australia currently has a unemployment rate of 5.3% and Australians have much better working conditions getting four weeks paid vacation time a year.

New Zealand's minimum wage is over $12 and it is one of the happiest countries in the world.

I'm unable to follow the argument that raising the minimum wage does nothing to reduce poverty. Unless, of course, you're referring to the fact that raises to the minimum wage have never been enough to bring anyone above the poverty line. Nevertheless, logic dictates that any raise to the minimum wage must, by definition, reduce poverty at least somewhat. Employers employ the minimum number of employees required to conduct business operations. To argue that employers would reduce the number of employees if the minimum wage was increased defies both common sense and logic.

He's commentating about a minimum wage for people without jobs.. Our problem is too many are trained for 20th centiry jobs that no longer exist. A candy company here fired as many as they could and replaced then with minimum wage workers. Down goes the middle class.

Sounds like someone is running towards the middle, careful Mitt you haven't wrapped it up yet. Does anyone really believe that a wall street guy cares one bit about the poor?

Count me among those who has troubles with a national minimum wage when economic develoment is an international competition. Also, I have not seen any study that says a higher minimum wage helps entry-level positions in the market place.

How about re-instating Glass-Steagall, and ending 'too big to fail'. A minimum wage bump is small potatoes.

Here's something to chew on. I used to work for a county government agency in NY, where, get this, the government decided to implement a loop-hole wherein they (meaning city, county and state governments) could pay their permanent part-time workers less than the NYS minimum wage and everybody else, small businesses and large businesses alike. were forced to pay the higher NYS minimum wage (at the time I was being paid the lower Federal minimum wage). I'm sure many businesses were unaware that big brother was playing the game do as I say, not as I do. After dealing with the representation and getting nowhere, I finally had to contact the newspaper to get anything done. After posting the story, our over-paid representatives of course denied any knowledge of this procedure.

Mitt supports anything that will get him elected. He'll be singing another tune if he ever became president. I don't trust this guy.
    • Kate Stewart  •  3 mths ago
asking congress to approve the automatic hikes after he is president doesn't mean it would happen so don't go running to vote for him on that promise. It means absolutely nothing to anyone. It's just a dangled carrot for the poor people who are only making min. wage...how pathetic can a rich creep like this really get? How low I should say.
    • Reason  •  3 mths ago
Yeah, but if he gets into the White House it will stay the same for years to come.
    • None  •  3 mths ago
Hahaha. Where's the so-called "Tea Party?" They were having epileptic fits 4 years ago, reflexively chanting "communism" and "socialism." They were co-opted into the GOP and now they're irrelevant as the GOP nominates someone not too unlike the person who drove them to madness.
    • R  •  3 mths ago
funny question is will he them have food and gas back in the mix. as it takes 9.86 dollars per hour now to = the 1968 min. wage. the problem is the wages above it don't go up to keep them as much above min. as they were.the other thing is the worry about cost for small bussineses, where was that when they made manditory health care cost on individuals that work for the small bussneses

Romney is right when it comes to minimum wage jumps. The defense from republicans is that it's a buren for small business? It would average about $9/week for a full time employee making minimum wage. It sounds a lot better for business to do small increments instead of jumps. The last jump was what, about $2/hour? That's an $80/week jump. That would burden business a lot more and causes either the business to cut back, raise prices,or both. But republicans don't see it that way. They would rather see a return to $3.35/hour because they think workers are akin to 2nd class citizens and think that they don't deserve what they earn. Actually,I'm surprised that Ron Paul is the only one who wants to repeal minimum wage so business can pillage from it. What he calls "job creation" would,in fact, not create jobs, only increase profits. If they can pay half of what they pay now for wages,do you think that business would double the workforce? Of course not!!! This is one of those rare times when I am for a republican's policy. But then again, republicans in general don't like it,which proves that this must be good. But here's another point,I can boast that I have Free Will that has the capacity to know good policy when I see it unlike those ranters out there that are automatically programmed to be against and incriminate any policy the opposition proposes. It's proof of their brainwashing, but they are programmed to automatically dismiss that as well LOL!!!
