Romney, under-funded rivals in hunt for cash

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney and his under-funded opponents are taking advantage of a weeklong lull in the Republican presidential nomination fight — no debate or primary is slated — to raise the money needed to carry out Super Tuesday strategies and compete in states beyond.

Romney is the wealthiest candidate in the race with a big bank account and a personal fortune he could tap. Yet, even he is spending the bulk of this quiet campaign week largely courting donors from California to New York as he looks to ensure that he can swamp his opponents on the TV airwaves in upcoming contests.

The quest is more urgent for his top two challengers — Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich — as they battle to emerge as the top alternative to Romney. Both have spent the entire campaign operating on shoestring budgets and working to capitalize on momentum from past victories. Now, with more than one state voting on a given day, they must figure out how to pay for get-out-the-vote efforts and TV ads in multiple states at once, far from an easy feat.

"It's all about money," Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said, describing the former House speaker's upcoming week.

A look at the upcoming primary calendar shows why.

There are 10 states with contests on March 6 — Super Tuesday. A full week's worth of ads running at a heavy level in every one of those states would cost about $5 million by industry estimates. And the stakes are higher than ever: There are 419 delegates to the Republican National Convention that will be selected that day, more than all those available in previous contests combined.

All the candidates, to be sure, are hoping that outside support from allied political action committees will materialize in upcoming states as it has before.

The deep-pocked Restore Our Future super PAC, run by former Romney aides and funded in part by associates from the candidate's former private equity company, has signaled that it plans to continue bankrolling TV ads attacking both Santorum and Gingrich. Republicans say a fresh round of ads by this group is imminent.

But there's no guarantee that the Red, White and Blue Fund — its chief donor is Foster Friess — will go on the air to help Santorum or that Winning Our Future — it's largely bankrolled by casino titan Sheldon Adelson's family — will rush in again to assist Gingrich.

So that mean both candidates have little choice but to try to fill their own campaign coffers.

Santorum, who cuts costs by sleeping at the homes of supporters in each state, says he raised $3 million in three days in the wake of his victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, largely online and probably from conservative grass-roots activists who are suddenly more optimistic about his chances of winning the nomination. He doesn't have the kind of big-donor network that Romney has built in the five years he's been running for president.

Thus, fundraising is a top priority as Santorum figures out how to compete with Romney in Michigan and Ohio, which are big, expensive states. That helps explain why Santorum has fewer campaign events each day this week than past weeks. Highly dependent on news coverage to capitalize on his momentum, Santorum planned public events in Washington state Monday as well as multiple appearances in Idaho, North Dakota and Michigan.

He'll need the money if he has any hope of following through with plans to go after Romney in Rust Belt states where advisers argue that Santorum's blue-collar background could help him.

Of all the candidates, Gingrich is the one planning to be most out of view this week.

He's in California through Thursday, almost exclusively focused on fundraising. He's holding three private fundraisers in Los Angeles, money events in San Diego and Fresno on Tuesday and in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday. He has just a handful of public events, including in Arizona and his former home state of Georgia.

Romney was campaigning in Arizona late Monday, stopping there between fundraisers in California and New York. He plans to head to Michigan for two days later this week to fend off a sudden challenge from Santorum — but is slated to stop in Idaho after that to raise money.

He's focused on defending himself in the next states to vote, with Gingrich challenging him in Arizona and Santorum in Michigan.

Anticipating a long fight from the start of this campaign, Romney spent nearly all of last year focusing on fundraising in hopes of stockpiling enough cash.

By year's end, Romney had raised far more than his rivals, roughly $56 million.

He had $19 million on hand as 2012 and the state-by-state voting began.

But he's spent the most, too.

So far, his campaign has spent about $11 million on TV ads. He's bolstered by Restore Our Future, which spent more than $14 million.

Still unclear is whether Romney will draw on his considerable personal fortune. He spent $45 million of his own money in 2008 but hasn't signaled he'll do the same this year.

By contrast, Gingrich raised $12.6 million while Santorum netted $2.2 million last year. And, on TV, Gingrich his allies have spent about $7 million while Santorum and his backers have spent about $2.5 million.

I think Maine was bought off by Romney. Especially since they won't count the rest of the votes. That's who they want for President, another Obama. That state should have and if they count the rest of the votes would have been RON PAUL. As far as Santorum goes he's running as a Christian, folks he's Catholic, the same people our forefathers were getting away from. The Church of England, which was CATHOLIC. The same child abusers, but again Religious people are people who can't think for themselves or worship for themselves, they have to have a MAN tell them what to do. People who vote for Romney are too corrupt to see, the people that vote for Santorum are too ignorant to see. The people who vote for Gingrich are just to stupid to see. PEOPLE WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP BEING AFRAID OF THINKING FOR YOURSELVES. Why do you continue to be afraid of FREEDOM? I know it's something we've never had but it's something we deserve. It's something that our forefathers wanted for themselves and us. Because of the reasons I've stated we've thrown it away and are still throwing it away. Mark my word I've been doing some research and everything that Ron Paul has been saying for years and is saying is true. Here's some things Ron Paul is not at liberty to say but knows. There are Concentration Camps all over the United States, they are being set up and referbish right now. For what or for who? My son has checked this out, we have one right here where we live. If we the People don't get it together and realize we are under Attack and it's not across the waters people. It's right here in our own Government. I just wish more people would listen, do more research. People who are out there and see things that we who go on with our lives and our blinders on are seeing. They are seeing a lot of Government vehicles on the roads with Cargo that we don't know what it is but yet if these Governemt vehicles are filling up with gas, no one is allowed to go in and get gas, wonder why? Obama is scared he's not going to be re-elected, so he's moving up his plans, like with Obamacare. Oh people I beg of you, open your eyes, your minds and check out online if I'm not telling the truth, then open your minds and vote these corrupt Government People out by voting for Ron Paul. He's smarter than you think, in fact he's been trying to tell us about this for years and we just wouldn't listen. Unless it happens to us and effects our lives we can't understand. But the Myans were telling us about 2012, well it's the end of the world as we know it. If we don't vote wiser, 2012 will bring a world that none of us want. Please vote for Ron Paul, maybe you have and our votes were discounted but at least try to fight the corruption. RON PAUL 2012. If I sound crazy or scared, maybe I am crazy from fear of what is about to come.

Two of the small Maine Caucuses were closed over the weekend due to inclement weather. The result at 95% of the vote was a win for Romney by only 194 votes. I was waiting to hear what the total vote count would be today when I learned that the Leaders of the State wide Maine caucus has announced that no new votes (they called them "late" votes) would be counted. What's up with that ? What are they afraid of , another possible repeat of what happened once all the Iowa votes were counted ? I smell a rotten fish. Why not let all the votes be counted ?
      • Oren 3 mths ago
Because they agreed before hand not to do it, or is that too obvious?

Funny, Ron Paul still has 4 million with no debt. Santorum is running 72,000 in debt, Gingrich is running 800,000 in debt. I wonder why they don't mention Ron Paul? Anyone else wonder? If your candidate cannot run a campaign without running into debt, they cannot run a Presidency without running into debt.
      • Logan 3 mths ago
I saw some polling results for Michigan and Ron Paul was not listed at all.Hard to believe he would be deliberately ignored but it looks like he IS being deliberately ignored.

Another Ron Paul Retard "Funny, Ron Paul still has 4 million with no debt. Santorum is running 72,000 in debt, Gingrich is running 800,000 in debt. I wonder why they don't mention Ron Paul? Anyone else wonder? If your candidate cannot run a campaign without running into debt, they cannot run a Presidency without running into debt."

Yes, Paul is running a wonderful campaign because he has no debt. He, of course has not won any states. But no debt!!!

Is there ANY Ron Paul supporter who is not a total nutcase? This is a serious question.
      • johnny 3 mths ago
Paul, Do you have total crap for brains? This is a serious question.

I wouldn't give Gingrich or Santorum 1 dime between them.
Both are bums in my book. Two losers trying for a comeback and not good for this country.

It might help if campaigns did not drag on for months. The entire process should be much faster. This piddling around with months of primaries rather than having a national primary day is as boring as it is stupid.
      • Jilly 3 mths ago
Correct primary should be all on the same day just like the election
      • Tommy 3 mths ago
States, the media, and who knows who, make a fortune from these primaries. The longer they go, the more money is made.
      • Shirley 3 mths ago
The states, they make money from bibery and people going to the primaries.
    • Richard  •  3 mths ago
. Stalin was right. He, who controls the vote count, controls who wins.
      • Shirley 3 mths ago
Yes control is the key word. He who can buy off or snow about who he is controls the vote. But let's face it, there is so much corruption in these primaries that it isn't funny and I do mean it isn't funny.

The Feds stated goal is to devalue the US Dollar over the next 30 years by over 50%. Ironically, it's to keep the price of goods from going down. I'm confused, why aren't we voting to end the Fed? Why aren't we voting for the candidate that is supported by individuals and not corporations or Wall Street?
    • shaye  •  Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania  •  3 mths ago
I'd still like to know why the media doesn't make a big deal out of how santorum with virtually no support in Iowa all of a sudden in a week surged to the top and why was the caucus in washington county Maine that Ron Paul has done the best in the past than other candidates and was projected to have won it was cancelled?? They claimed it was due to weather, yet a girl scouts fundraiser went on?? Anything to fool the public into thinking that no one likes Ron Paul..he's easily the most popular with the people, just not the government-media-military-industrial complex
    • 2012  •  3 mths ago
Not a word for Ron Paul, who has no trouble raising money. Another "writer"worried about their job,if they mention Dr Paul.
    • TAK  •  Norfolk, New York  •  3 mths ago
So they try again to pretend that Ron Paul is not there actualy raising more money than Newt or Santorum plus he is showing second place in Rueters poll still today. Ron Paul 2012 or nothing else!
    • Mark  •  3 mths ago
WOW, way to pretend Ron Paul isn't in this. They don't even mention his name, what a surprise.
