COMMENTRY | With 42 percent of the vote, Mitt Romney has won the Nevada caucus. I can't say I'm surprised since 1 in 4 voters in Nevada are Mormon, as reported by The Associated Press. Obviously, the Mormons would love to help vote in the nation's first Mormon president just like I'd like to help vote in the first female president.
While I was impressed with Romney early on in the caucuses and debates, I'm not as impressed with him now. I don't think he understands who is in the middle class, and he's spending too much time attacking Obama and not enough time explaining his presidential plans.
I want to know what he's going to do for this country, and how he plans to do it. Statements like, "I will not just slow the growth of government. I will cut it," and "I will not just freeze the government's share of the economy. I will reduce it," as reported by The Ticket, don't thrill me. I want to know how he plans to cut government. What programs and departments does he plan to eliminate? How exactly does he plan to cut the government's share of the economy? I don't just want catchphrases and sound bites. I want to hear his plan. I want to hear it in detail, and I want to hear in sooner rather than later.
Even as unfinished as the polls are now, Newt Gingrich will probably come in second and Ron Paul will come in third ahead of Rick Santorum. That does not surprise me. So far Paul has come in second twice, last twice and third once, and holds seven delegates.
With 152 delegates handed out so far, Paul is not that far behind the other candidates. Romney holds 97 delegates. Gingrich holds 30 delegates. And Santorum holds 16 delegates. The race is far from over, and it's quite possible Paul could surpass Santorum and Gingrich if they don't build some serious momentum. We know Paul plans to build momentum with every primary and caucus, and he's in the race to stay.
Gingrich has stated he plans to stay in the race after Nevada. My prediction is Santorum will drop out due to family obligations, then we'll be down to three. From there, it's just a matter of whether or not Gingrich sticks it out until the end. I hope he does. It's still anybody's race. Plus, it'd be weird to see the last several debates with just Romney and Paul.
