BOSTON, Mass. — Mitt and Ann Romney donated a total of $150,000 to the Romney Victory Fund, the joint fundraising effort between the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee, his campaign said on Friday. The donation of $75,000 each is the maximum amount an individual can contribute to the fund.
The contribution marks the first time this election cycle that the couple has put their own money into his campaign for president. When he ran in 2008, the Romneys put more than $42 million into his campaign.
The presumptive Republican nominee was able to make it through the primaries this year without writing himself a check, though he never ruled out the option. When asked last year if he would consider putting his own money into his campaign, he kept his answer noncommittal.
“That’s counsel I’m going to keep with Ann and myself, and that’s all,” Romney said in May 2011. “So I can’t give you anymore update than that. We’re just going to keep that to our own counsel.”
