Romney's Weapon Against Anti-Mormon Bias: Obama

New voter survey results indicate that Mitt Romney does indeed face bias against his religion, Mormonism, from Republicans, and in particular from Southern evangelical Christians. But, the survey also reveals something else about evangelicals that could help Romney overcome this bias, should he win the nomination.

It seems evangelicals, an important part of the Republican voter base, dislike President Barack Obama more than they dislike Mormonism.

"This is good news for Romney and bad news for those who have been arguing Romney cannot rally the GOP base," said John Geer, a professor of political science at Vanderbilt University and one of the researchers to analyze the results of the survey.

"He can in fact rally the troops for the fall election. And he can thank President Obama for that," Geer said in a press release issued by Vanderbilt University.

The survey, conducted in early January by the national polling firm YouGov, found that 20 percent of Republicans nationally would not for a "qualified Mormon" for President. For Southern evangelical Republicans that number goes up to 31 percent. [The World's Top Religions (Infographic)]

This is a considerable bias; given similar questions about a woman or African American candidate, that proportion drops to less than 1 percent, according to Geer. There is genuine bias out there against Mormons, he said.

But this bias looks unlikely to hurt Romney's chances with these voters in a general election. The survey found that 12 percent of Southern evangelicals would stay at home rather than vote for Romney in the general election. This is a good sign for Romney, since his competitor for the Republican nomination, Newt Gingrich, pulled a similar number. When given the options of staying home, voting for Romney and voting for Obama, only 3 percent of evangelicals picked the latter.

Using a "feeling thermometer" scale of 0 to 100 the survey also found that Southern evangelicals over 60 were quite frosty toward Obama, giving him 6 degrees —a "ridiculously low" score, according to Geer. Evangelicals of all ages gave him an 11. By comparison, atheists in general got 19 degrees.

The survey used both a nationally representative sample of 1,800 Americans and an additional sample of 600 Southern evangelical Christians.

The best defense against the bias should be the constitution.

you mean the one obombers tearing apart and wiping his butt with? that constitution?

Obombers? You aren't one to frequent the science section, are you, since it's usually above whatever grade (1st?) you happen to be in. With laser like focus though, you see the word "Obama" and have to react like one of Pavlov's dogs. Hey, I just found out why this is in the science section! It's a study of OCD!

Mormons are sworn to defend the Constitution. They believe that the Constitution is dangling on a thin thread which is being eaten away by all the special interest reformers.

They thought that Bush did. He was the "decider" and he had a rubber stamp congress. I can see how they would think that if they really didn't understand how the government works.

        Huh:

Yes on the Bush thing especially in his last two years when Congress and the Senate were completely controlled by the DemonRats super-majority.

I wish we as a country could get past this religion thing and the race thing. It really matters not what religion you are or your color of skin. What matters is your committment to the country, adhereance to constitutional law, and your ablilty to lead in the American tradition.

I beg to differ. We do not want a Muslim president, or an Asian. I was surprised that we elected Obama, and equally surprised at the good job he has done, but the "social experiment" has run it's course. There are far too many good, white, Christian candidates out there to expect any other alternatives...
      • Kevin W 4 mths ago
It depends what candidate thinks about issues. But if religion is part of that, then it should also be considered. For instance--does a candidate believe that Jesus' return is soon, and that therefor environmentalists' concerns are unfounded, because the world is about to be destroyed and renewed anyway? That would be important to know.

Religous people are biased? How can this be?
      • Wayne 4 mths ago
I believe it is because of self rightousness and arrogency. "Their cult better than yours" idea. Face it everyone is bias against something. The true test of any religion or organization is the quality of the people it produces. Being everyone hates Mormons it is because Mormons, don't drink beer etc.., or smoke,or take illegal drugs, or even coffe or tea, this tends to make them live longer. Their belief in God is not inline with the accepted Christian creeds ( which were developed 400 years after the bible) Want to be having one God like the Jewish and unifying all the different sects of the time these developed a riddle of the three in one God and called it the Trinity " a word not found in the Bible" anyone at the time who did not agree was beheaded. This was the out come of the creeds millions killed in the Roman Empire if they didn't follow the creeds. Today Mormons go back to square one and follow more closely the people before the creeds. So we are labled Heritics and must be destroyed. The State of Missouri had a kill on sight order in the 1850 and was just take off the books a few years ago. All in the name of the Christian God of the Creeds.

Lets see 52 years ago the Evengelicals used to stand on street corners and go door to door preaching and handing out pamplets telling why we must never have a Catholic President. Of course those same loving Christians still attack the Catholic Church and have been known to leave anti Catholic literature in a persons door if they happen to be so brave as to place a statue of Mary or Jesus in there yards. There KKK religious back ground is still strong in there anti Catholic beliefs even tho they no longer promote the KKK there unable to deny tho they may try there past affiliation with the Klan. So Mormons don't feel to bad OK and GOD forbid if a Jew tries to run for President.

This is proof that RELIGION has NO place in the government.. We are suppose to be a country that allows all of it people, whether you are a visitor here or a citizen to practice your belief, without fear of persecution. If you truly practice your religion from the heart, then doing harm to someone who does not believe the way you do, it not what any God would want... stop judging.

Dislike is what is wrong with this country. If you are a christian then you cannot have room in you heart for hatred. Is this what southern evangelicans are, then they cannot call themselves christians that believe in Jesus Christ. A true christian does not discriminate or hate.

The hate for Obama trumps the hate for Mormons ... no surprise here. I wonder how it would be if Romney were black.

Would the hate for Obama trump the hate for a Black Mormon? Just wondering...

Question: Are evangelicals christians or are they a so called cult like they view mormons? Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? One of the founding principles of this Country is Freedom of Religion. As long as they didn't push their religious beliefs on me I would not have a problem.

I do not care if the best candidate was a little green person from Mars as long as they fix things.
    • Swamp Fox  •  4 mths ago
I wish that ALL candidates would quit with the hate and accusations. They need to stand up, present THEIR views for the future of Amercian, THEIR plans and goals for a term in office and then let the people decide who is best for Amercia; be it Catholic, Mormon, Jew, Evangelical, athiest, or what ever. I care about what they plan to do, more than I care about how they worship.

A few questions...Why is this "science"? Why does religion matter? Why do Christians, who supposedly profess to to be all about love and tolerance, hate everybody who's not Christians? Why do conservatives want everybody to be exactly like them? And why do they think that people will not remember what a bunch of lying hypocrites they all are? Just wonderin'...
    • MJ  •  4 mths ago
I would rather have a President that is focused on improving OUR country in terms of freedom, jobs and debt.

Virtually every other issue is on the back burner until those three are addressed and fixed.
