Ron Paul: Elizabeth Warren Is a ‘Socialist,‘ Public Schooling Is a ’Socialist Idea’

In an ABC News/Yahoo! News interview Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Texas Rep. Ron Paul took a few jabs at Keynesian economics, a Massachusetts senate candidate, and one of our society’s keystone institutions.

After interviewer Terry Moran read a controversial quote from Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, that “there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own,” Rep. Paul said Warren was wrong “because she is a socialist.” When asked about Warren’s comments on public education and whether public schooling is socialism, Rep. Paul said “In a way. When the state runs things, that is you know, a socialist idea, that it should be collective. I preach homeschooling and private schooling and competition in school.”

Rep. Paul went on to point out that what Warren forgets in her argument on the social contract is that the money had to come from “productive effort.”

“She‘s saying that it’s from the government? Who’s the government? The government created nothing,” said Rep. Paul. “The only thing they can do is steal, and rob people with a gun, and forceable transfer wealth from one person to another. ”

In regards to taxes on the wealthy and millionaires, Rep. Paul made a point to acknowledge where he may be distinct among other Republicans.

“I’m pretty critical of the wealth of lots of millionaires and billionaires because they ripped us off, they got the benefits and the tax breaks,” Paul said.

When asked if he would run for President on a third party ticket, Rep. Paul said “I have no plans to do that” and “I don’t want to.”

In a light-hearted question at the interview’s end, Rep. Paul said the happiest moment in his life, aside from his wedding day and the birth of his children, was when he first opened his medical practice after years of hard-work and schooling.

Ron Paul's ideas are just "Theories". They are untested. He doesn't even try to imagine what the implications would be if his crazy ideas were actually put into practice. For somebody running for President, this is irresponsible. But he doesn't care. He's wealthy. He would be protected. His ideas would hurt only the poor and middle class. Home Schooling??? F U Ron Paul !

No matter what Ron Paul and other similar thinkers say, the bottom line is that those who are wealthy could never have gotten that way on their own. Even someone as brilliant as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates initially needed the assistance of banks (regulated and guaranteed by the federal government) to provide funds to begin operations. They needed state and federal laws and agencies (funded by taxpayers) to provide a framework for establishing their business. They needed educated and dedicated workers to expand and grow their business. They needed consumers to buy their products. And they needed the established stock exchanges and financial markets to maintain and grow their own wealth and the wealth of their shareholders. And those are the wealthy that actually did something. What about those who received their wealth through inheritance. Who never did nor ever will do anything productive in their entire life. Think Huguette Clark, the billionaire copper heiress who just passed away after spending the last 40 years collecting dolls (who were her closest friends). Now, we taxpayers get to pay for the criminal investigations and possible prosecutions of her accountant and lawyer because the family is not happy about how she distributed her estate. Those who think that the 99% are jealous of the supposedly successful 1% have got it all wrong. We aren't jealous, we're angry because the 1% believe they are entitled to their wealth based upon their own efforts, when in reality they were simply playing the drums in front of an entire orchestra that came together to facilitate their success.

Ron Paul once introduced legislation that would have made it legal to SUE an elected official if he or she did not pursue the same platform that they campaigned on
      • Ilona 6 mths ago
I like that, you should be able to sue for that (and I am usually against suing in general)
      • Jeff 6 mths ago
do you have a link for this? I am very curious and a big Ron Paul supporter.

There is a difference between Steve Jobs and AVG. Capitalism good. Crony capitalism bad. The government should not get involved in corporations, Let them fall for their horrible ideas. Capitalist should not be categorized the same as crony capitalist.

Ron Paul's not saying that public education is wrong, he's saying that the socialist aspects of the public school system hurt us because it fights against competition. More public money is given to bad schools than to good ones in an effort to try and raise the performance of the bad ones. How is rewarding schools that underperform and not ones that excel a good thing? Parents have gone to jail because they have tried to put their kids in better schools but because they were out of the school district, it was illegal. THAT is the socialist aspect that Ron Paul is talking about. Its the insanely blind notion that as long as it's all equal, then it's all good. Equality that infringes with competition and the wishes of the parents to decide what is best for their children is not a good thing.

Steve Jobs parents were engineers at Lockheed Martin....can you say born with a silver spoon in his mouth, as well as having engineers as parents...I am sure steve jobs didnt have to worry about being cold, hungry and candles to study by.

and he also went to a private university.....if only we all had that opportunity to make the best of a great situation.

I am not saying steve jobs didnt perform, nor that he was not a great innovator or marketing expert.... I am just saying he had a hand up.

"The tax which will be paid for [the] purpose [of education] is
not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings,
priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the
people in ignorance." --Thomas Jefferson to George Wythe, 1786.
      • Ilona 6 mths ago
My school tax ($1100 a yr.) times a thousand=$1,100,000 your statement does not hold true nowadays (for me anyway) I only make 10K a year there is no way kings that rose up would get this much from me, and anyway I believe Thomas Jefferson was talking about something else entirely and the "kings priests and nobles" he was referring to are actually the ones charging us the crazy amount of school tax (and every other tax now)
      • Michael 6 mths ago
State governments can do that, of the 17 delegated powers granted to the Federal Government there was never one that gave then the power to provide education. Paul is arguing that it's not the Feds job but the local and state governments job, see the 9th and 10th Amendments.

Jefferson wrote that before our money was being spent on womens studies (hate men be a lesbian) courses. Classes being taugh in Spanish, free school lunches, diversity classes (divide all of us in to races with separate agendas). Our govt school system is messed up.
    • Gawrence  •  6 mths ago
Was it not Thomas Jefferson, one of our founding Fathers, who put nearly all his money into a public school system and died broke, giving all in the belief, that all children deserve an education?
    • ManInTheStreet  •  6 mths ago

      • Horatio 6 mths ago
True... but then... I never voted for an idiot like Ron Paul. Not even close. Not even remotely.
    • Shadow  •  6 mths ago
You're right about one thing, Paul. The governent does take money from some and give it to others. In this case, it's the rich who are getting richer at the expense of the lower and middle classes.
      • Marilyn 6 mths ago
You're forgetting about Corporate Welfare. Oil Company Subsidies. Corporate jet subsidies. Those are OK? And its not OK if a disabled or elderly person is just looking for a place to live and some food in their refridgerator? They are the REAL "freeloaders", I guess.
    • Gmr74  •  6 mths ago
Sounds like Ron Paul wants an entirely new country.

"Who’s the government? The government created nothing,” said Rep. Paul. “The only thing they can do is steal, and rob people with a gun, and forceable transfer wealth from one person to another. ”

We the People are the government. We created the government (at least our Founding Fathers created the organization).... Therefore if you don't like the government blame the People of the United States. If al-Quaida can make those connections and use them as justification to make war on the US public, then surely Mr. Paul can too.

I do not think any responsible or knowledgeable person would claim that Thomas Jefferson was a "socialist". However, he valued public education above nearly all else, due to his belief that it was essential for a democracy. Jefferson felt that if you empower people to vote, there is a critical need to educate these people so they can be a productive and informed citizenry. Therefore, public-funded education was key to being a good citizen and a responsible democracy. It is for these reasons that he valued his contribution to public education above that of being president, vice president, secretary of state, and the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson would have rejected Ron Paul’s statement on public funding of education.

You know, I stand corrected about Ron Paul. I have made statements that he is a "nut job". I regret making those statements. He sounds more like the sane one than 90% of politicans.
    • mark  •  6 mths ago
Many of our Founding Fathers were very strong proponents of Free public education for Americans. Abraham Baldwin was just one of them! The founding of the University of Virginia was more important to Thomas Jefferson than being President!!

Homeschooling can serve as a national education model. Just tune to the shows "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" and "Jeopardy" as teaching materials, "Mythbusters" to cover the sciences, and read the cooking instructions from a TV dinner box.Reply
    • Keith  •  6 mths ago
It's OK, there wont be any public schools if we keep electing the status quo.. policing the world, and bailing out countries and banks.... hell you almost have to pay to go to public school now... they have to have fundraisers for everything
(and our public school system is number 1 in the world right?) Blind sheep.

Too many of you USers (non-Canadian North Americans) have a problem with semantics. You take words like Communist, socialist, even liberal and make them into dirty words to label people and ideas with in a priori manner instead of considering ideas on their merits. You deserve to have "capitalist" made a dirty word, but the rest of the world has a little bit more sense and for the most part refuses to play your childish semantic games... Try thinking and reasoning without use of ideological hate epithets for a change if you're still at all capable of it, which is doubtful!

Ron Paul went to public school himself, he also worked his way through college and made a medical practice that didn't accept medicare because he didn't believe in it so he treated all of those patients FOR FREE. Even if they needed surgery!!!! He's such an uncaring man. Do a search on google: Before He Delivered For Voters, Paul Delivered Babies
