Royals hire Sveum as coach

The Kansas City Royals added Dale Sveum to their coaching staff, the club announced Thursday.

Sveum, who was fired as the Chicago Cubs manager on Monday, will handle infield instruction and other coaching duties for the Royals.

The club also announced that it did not renew the contracts of third base coach Eddie Rodriguez and bench coach Chino Cadahia. Cadahia was on personal leave to attend to a family matter late in the season. He is expected to be offered another job in the organization.

Sveum will likely take over as either bench coach or third base coach.

Sveum spent six years on the Milwaukee Brewers' coaching staff, including three with current Royals manager Ned Yost. He managed the Cubs for two seasons. He went 126-194 in that span.
