    RTI Biologics falls following 4Q results

    ALACHUA, Fla. (AP) — Orthopedic implant maker RTI Biologics Inc. said Tuesday its profit slipped in the fourth quarter as revenue from its dental business fell.

    The company's forecast for its first-quarter and full-year 2012 earnings also fell shy of Wall Street expectations and its shares sank 54 cents, or 13.5 percent, to $3.45 in Tuesday trading.

    RTI said its profit declined to $2.4 million, or 4 cents per share, from $2.8 million, or 5 cents per share. Its revenue fell 5 percent, to $42.9 million from $45.4 million.

    Analysts expected the company to report a profit of 4 cents per share and revenue of $41.2 million, according to FactSet.

    The company said revenue from its dental business decreased because of a change in the terms of its agreement with its distributor. RTI said its sports medicine and bone graft substitute and general orthopedic implants did well during the fourth quarter, and international revenue increased.

    For full-year 2011, RTI posted a profit of $8.4 million, or 15 cents per share. In 2010 it reported a loss of $129.4 million, or $2.36 per share. Revenue grew 2 percent, to $169.3 million from $166.2 million.

    The company forecast a profit of 15 to 17 cents per share for the full year 2012, on $174 million to $176 million in revenue. It said it expects a profit of 3 cents per share and $41 million to $42 million in revenue in the first quarter.

    Analysts are expecting RTI Biologics to report an annual profit of 19 cents per share on $175.8 million in revenue, and in the first quarter, they are forecasting a profit of 4 cents per share and $42.6 million in revenue.
