Ruskin HS seniors reflect on living through pandemic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Looking back on high school, you probably don’t have many memories of living through a global pandemic.

Ruskin High School Class of 2024 graduate Ramiah Hicks does.

“It was just foggy and I just knew to keep going through because I knew it wouldn’t be like that forever, so just keeping that mindset to keep going was my biggest motivation,” Hicks said.

And it did. She’s now getting to walk the stage with a could hundred of her peers.

“We’ve got close to 300. Last year we had about 300, so we’ve been pretty steady in terms of those cohorts, but this is a survivable group because they’ve been through so much,” Hickman Mills School District Superintendent Yaw Obeng said.

Obeng said this graduating class started school fall of 2020. They’ve had to deal with virtual learning and then transitioning back to what life was pre-pandemic.

“They’ve gone through different kinds of challenges. We’ve had staff members and teachers pass away because of illness and they preserved, so I think it’s real triumph for them,” Obeng said.

For Hicks, she’s kept her head above water. Mainly because of her mom’s support but also by living up to her own words.

“I came up with this saying and it was find your spark, make your fire, so find what makes that spark on and make that fire, make your fire,” she said.

Hicks said she’s going to Johnson County Community College to study graphic design. Thursday, kicked off graduation season in the Kansas City metro.

Friday’s graduates include Liberty, Belton, Fort Osage, Excelsior Springs and Harrisonville.
