Russia defends its veto of UN resolution on Syria

MOSCOW (AP) — President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday defended Russia's decision to veto a European-backed U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria, saying it would have opened the door to possible military action.

The resolution threatened sanctions against Syria if it didn't halt its brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. But Medvedev said in televised remarks that the authors of the resolution had refused to include a Russia-proposed provision saying there should be no foreign military interference in Syria.

"That means only one thing: our partners at the U.N. Security Council aren't excluding the repetition of the Libyan scenario, although in private conversations they said that they understand that Syria is not Libya," Medvedev said at a session of the presidential Security Council. "The proposed text would have allowed to again resort to weapons."

Russia and China vetoed Tuesday's measure, which would have been the first legally binding resolution against Syria since President Bashar Assad's forces began attacking civilian protesters in mid-March. The United States and European countries have strongly criticized the veto.

The crackdown has left nearly 3,000 people dead, according to U.N. estimates.

Russia abstained in the U.N. vote authorizing military intervention in Libya, but harshly criticized NATO for the excessive use of force and civilian casualties from its campaign. The NATO-backed rebels in Libya eventually succeeded in overthrowing strongman Moammar Gadhafi.

Medvedev and other Russian leaders have strongly warned the West against emulating Libya's experience in Syria. Medvedev said Russia backs international demands that the Syrian government end violence against civilians, but also believes that the opposition must disavow "extremists."

Unfortunately, China and Russia are probably right. That is, any sanctions against Syria would simply punish those that the U.N. intends to help. U.N., and other group, sanctions seldom. if ever, convince manaical governments to change their ways.

"The crackdown has left nearly 3,000 people dead, according to U.N. estimates."

Where are all the protests around the world, especially in European capitals. Protesters in their thousands would be out in the streets if you replace "Syria" with "Israel." No double standard, though.

Congratz to Russia. Sad that we have to turn to Russia to save ourselves from another pointless war.

Medvedev has a point. Absent the recent history of intervention by the West, in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, OR had the authors given the assurance of the requested provision promising not to intervene militarily in Syria, the Russians and Chinese might be properly criticized for their skepticism. Those who consider this to be just one authoritarian regime covering for another have a point, too... but this excuse wouldn't be available to China and Russia, had the advocates of this proposal made that simple concession.

Hey Ted Turner--------Go give the UN another million dollars to run their operations---how did that work out ?

It was a billion and it was a gift to aid refugees and children, clearing land mines and fighting disease and it relieved a great amount of suffering. What have you done to help suffering people?

As troops still trickle out of Iraq. And the planned withdrawal from Afghanistan nears. The administration needs to find places for these troops to go. Or else they will be a political nightmare on the unemployment line before the upcoming elections. We need to activate the draft. That way those that profit the most from these wars can contribute their sons and daughters to them.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend -------is a proverb that advances the concept that someone who is the enemy of your enemy is therefore your friend. It further means that because two parties have a common enemy, one can use the other to advance their goals. Often described as an Arabic proverb, there is also an identical Chinese proverb.

In foreign policy, it's a doctrine commonly used to interact with a significant enemy through an intermediary rather than through direct confrontation.

If we eliminated Arms manufacturers and bomb makers. If we used all the energy and effort that we put out hating one another on this planet and put towards making this planet a more
"livable place" there would be no children going to bed hungry tonight or starving to death.

I agree with the sentiment and disagree with the facts.. violence is a part of who we are as humans and though its regrettable its existence is inevitable.. Sheep can pass all the pro vegetarianism proposals they want but they are futile if wolves don't agree......

President Eisenhower made a similar observation. He was a very smart man who is under-appreciated today.

Damascas will soon be Destroyed,Jesus fortold it and it will come to pass. This message came to me concerning Damascus: ‘Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted. Sheep will graze in the streets and lie down unafraid. There will be no one to chase them away. The fortified cities of Israel will also be destroyed, and the power of Damascus will end. The few left in Aram will share the fate of Israel’s departed glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah 17:1-3 (NLT)

These opening verses paint a bleak picture. The city of Damascus will become a heap of ruins, utterly destroyed. Few, if any, buildings will be left standing. The once great city will be devoid of human life and will become home to all manner of wildlife in the absence of humans to chase them away.

According to these verses, the cities of Aroer, which are located on the northern bank of the Arnon River just east of the Dead Sea, will also be deserted. However, the passage doesn’t say they will be destroyed in the same manner as Damascus, just that they will be deserted. It may be that people simply flee these cities out of fear.

In addition, many of the fortified cities in northern Israel will also be destroyed. Those few who remain in Aram, 38 miles south southeast of Damascus, will share the fate of these northern Israeli cities.

“‘In that day the glory of Israel will be very dim, for poverty will stalk the land. Israel will be abandoned like the grain fields in the valley of Rephaim after the harvest. Only a few of its people will be left, like the stray olives left on the tree after the harvest. Only two or three remain in the highest branches, four or five out on the tips of the limbs. Yes, Israel will be stripped bare of people,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel.” Isaiah 17:4-6 (NLT)

      • marvin 7 mths ago
i sense some sarcasm here... because we did not accomplish ANYTHING in those wars. americans are at more risk than ever to terrorists attacks. trillions in debt, and we are in more danger than we were 10+ years ago.

why havnt we impeached the president for doing all those unathorized wars without the consent of congress. so the american people are led by the UN now?

if Syria's dictator was out to kill syrian civilians.. there would be a lot more deaths, unless the deaths were under reported. im sure the military and police were defending themselves from armed protestors MOST of the time.

While I am Scratching my head----didn't America form a alliance with Russia to help them from the invading German Army ?
      • Somebody 7 mths ago
Actually no. There was no help from America or any other country when Russia was invaded by Nazi Germany. Why are you trying to make up history?
      • William 7 mths ago
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was wary of Joseph Stalin and his dictatorial regime, but realized the Soviets were necessary for the Allied war effort. The Soviet leader reciprocated these feelings towards his Western allies, as he also viewed the alliance as necessity in order to defeat the Nazi invasion.

I understand what Russia is saying about extremist. Why fight to save a country when it's only going to be taken over by another extremist organization? Look at the problems in Egypt and Libya may be soon having the same problems. All of it boils down to Sharia law.

Here's a vote: Thumbs up if we should stay OUT of Syria.
Thumbs down if we should attack them.
