Russia successfully tests Bulava ballistic missile

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's navy on Friday successfully test-fired an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile, the weapon the government hopes will become a key part of the nation's nuclear arsenals, the Defense Ministry said.

The Bulava missile was launched from the Yuri Dolgoruky submarine underwater in the White Sea, and the missile's warheads reached the Kura testing range on the Pacific Kamchatka Peninsula, some 5,500 kilometers (3,500 miles) away, ministry spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov said in televised remarks.

The test was Bulava's third successful launch in a row after a string of failures that raised questions about the future of Russia's most expensive post-Soviet military project.

The Bulava is a three-stage missile that can carry up to 10 individually targeted warheads at a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles). Russian officials have boasted of its ability to dodge any potential missile defenses.

Friday's test was the third launched from the Yuri Dolgoruky, a new Borei-class nuclear submarine specifically designed to carry 12 Bulava missiles. The submarine's construction started in 1996 and dragged on due to poor financing.

Several other Borei-class nuclear submarines are under construction, and Russia plans to complete a total of eight subs by 2015. They will gradually replace aging Soviet-built submarines.

At least Russians and whole world know what they are doing with defense budget, unlike in US, no one knows where money goes, and all done by secretive.

That should tell you that our stuff is infinitely more powerful/advanced than theirs. If they can broadcast their most powerful stuff to the world, it probably wasn't worth hiding.

Ok, imagine a Iranian sub with a Russian Bulava missile sitting off the east coast. Now say, no big deal. The Russians also know we can counter ICBM launched from ground with lasers. The advantage of this weapon is it is only a few minutes away when launched near our coast line.
      • AUC 7 mths ago
LOL if they could even get that far. Russia has many points to bring their Navy out into the waters. Not so much for Iran. The waters are tight through the Gulf. They'd be noticed on their way out into the Atlantic.
      • tallest4eva 6 mths ago
Why would Russia sell their flagship ICBM to Iran?
Only the US sells it's cutting edge military hardware to it's stooges in the Middle East!!!

The Russians can go take over in Afghanistan again..but they may need to worry about Rambo running around kicking their a_s in a tank top under extreme heat with no water..oh yeah and blowing up 4 tanks with one missile while saving the local people.

Please people - understand that which I have only recently grasped - that nuclear dismantlement/ non-prolif. whatever simply means updating & building more advanced ones. Out with the old, in with the new! What did Bill Hicks say? "Go back to sleep America, your government is in control again." R.I.P.

and russia gives the usa crap for missile defense systems in europe. if anyone thinks that russia or china would be better at being a lone superpower you're kidding or just delusional yourself because they will grind any difference of opinion into a lot of unmarked graves.

It no longer matters who has what or how many! When push comes to shove and some idiot presses the nuke button, life will stop as we know it here on earth! Now that is a real smart thing to do, isn't it? I mean come on folk's, who the hell is going to try and take over Russia, China or the U.S.?? Who want's to? So why do we need these huge warhead type missiles? I think China and Russia need to get on Zoloft and quit worrying so much as to being attacked. Their attacks will all come from within in the future and not from anyone outside their borders...that's fact jack!

Hi Americans, yes Russia knows US sees Iran and Nkorea as world threat and Israel is not, but proposing Interceptors with small range near Russian boarders with out Russian Approval undermines Russian National Security. Some Americans think that Europeans want that intersection or asked for it, it does not matter because Russian Federation never asked for your protection to cover Russia territory. Ether installs them in USA or proposes United Single system that will be shared with Russia, but first USA has to define whose the world thread is really is here!

They (and we) build them to deter anyone from trying to take their resources by conventional forces. Russia has HUGE untapped natural resources in their oil fields in the east (bordering on China). when you have a billion people to your southern border with the fastest growing population and economy in the world, you can bet that there are plans in the Chinese military that call for seizing those assets. Nukes are not Offensive weapons, they are defensive. It's unfortunate that they exist at all, but if not for them, the map of the world would be very different today and the loss of life in the 20th and 21st century would have been a lot higher...
