Pope Benedict XVI arrives to celebrate Yankee Stadium mass

Sun Apr 20, 2:44 PM ET

NEW YORK (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI arrived Sunday to a deafening roar from a crowd of tens of thousands who had packed into New York's Yankee Stadium to hear the pope celebrate mass.

Handkerchiefs in the yellow and white of the Vatican waved from the bleachers and a wall of sound followed the white popemobile as it slowly carried Benedict around the outer perimeter of the ballpark.

White-robed clerics held cameras aloft and snapped photographs as the pope descended from the Mercedes-Benz popemobile as the cries of delight from the crowd crescendoed.

As Benedict disappeared into the dugout to dress for the mass, for which some 58,000 people had packed into New York's shrine to baseball, the crowd began to chant "Benedetto" while others sang hymns of praise.
