NATO soldier dies in Afghanistan: military

Sat May 3, 1:34 AM ET

KABUL (AFP) - A soldier serving with the NATO force in Afghanistan has died after being struck in an explosion that wounded two other troops, the alliance's International Security Assistance Force said Saturday.

The soldiers were hit by an "unknown explosion" Friday during security operations in the troubled southern province of Helmand, ISAF said in a statement.

The 40-country force did not give the nationalities of the soldiers, leaving this to their national authorities.

Most of the ISAF soldiers working in Helmand are from the British military. However US Marines moved into the province last week in a push to remove Taliban fighters from around the southernmost Garmser district.

The latest fatality takes to 48 the number of international soldiers to lose their lives in Afghanistan this year, most of them fighting the Taliban, waging an insurgency against the Western-backed government and foreign troops.
