Accidental blasts kill three, injure 20 in Afghan capital

Mon May 5, 2:05 AM ET

KABUL (AFP) - Three Afghan children were killed when an old rocket they were playing with exploded in Kabul Monday, the interior ministry said, as 20 policemen were wounded in a separate accidental blast in the city.

"Three kids were killed and two others were injured when an old round exploded. They were playing with the device," interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary told AFP.

A police officer at the site said the children were aged up to 12 years.

Separately 20 policemen were wounded when one of them dropped a rocket-propelled grenade and it exploded among a group preparing for a police mission, Bashary said.

"It was an accidental explosion from a rocket-propelled grenade. Twenty police officers have been wounded," Bashary said.

Afghanistan is awash with ammunition and unexploded ordnance after decades of war. The conflict is continuing with Afghan security forces and their international allies battling an Islamic fundamentalist insurgency.
