AFP
Israel says PM Olmert accused of corruption

Thu May 8, 4:30 PM ET

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel's justice ministry confirmed on Thursday that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is suspected of corruption in a case that had been the subject of a comprehensive gag order.

It said a probe has been launched into suspicions that Olmert unlawfully receiving payments from a foreign businessman based in Israel during his tenure as mayor of Jerusalem and his time as industry minister.

Olmert's office said the premier, who has faced calls to resign over the fraud probe, would make a statement on the case later Thursday following the lifting of the blackout.

It is the fifth such investigation into the dealings of the 62-year-old Olmert before he became prime minister in 2006, although one case against him has been dismissed. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Political commentators have said Olmert would be morally obliged to resign if he is charged.
