Scooter knocks down Madonna at top of British charts

LONDON (AFP) - Scooter knocked Madonna off the top of the British album charts on Sunday with their new album going straight in at number one.

The German techno band's first album since 2002, entitled "Jumping All Over The World", ended the US pop queen's reign atop both charts but she remained number one in the singles list with the track "4 Minutes" featuring Justin Timberlake.

Madonna topped the bill Saturday at the Big Weekend festival near Maidstone, south-east of London, attended by 30,000 people.

Her album "Hard Candy" was pushed to number two in the charts ahead of Duffy's "Rockferry" at three, Sam Sparro's self-titled album at four and "Third" by Portishead at number five.

In the singles chart, Wiley was at number two with "Wearing My Rolex" and Sam Sparro was at number three with "Black and Gold".

Will.I.Am featuring Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole was in fourth place with "Heartbreaker" while Usher featuring Young Jeezy was at five with "Love In This Club".

Coldplay's new single "Violet Hill", entered the charts in eighth place after being made available commercially. The track was downloaded free from their website two million times within a week.

"It would have outsold the whole of last week's top 40 (singles) four times over," a spokesman for the British band said Tuesday.
