WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated a veteran Drug Enforcement Agency agent as the new head of anti-drug operations at the Department of Homeland Security.

Grayling Williams, whose nomination must be approved by the US Senate, has 28 years of federal and local law enforcement experience, including rising to a senior position in the DEA, the White House said in a statement.

If approved, Williams will head the DHS Office of Counternarcotics Enforcement.

"Disrupting the flow of illegal drugs across our borders is critical to our nation's safety and security," said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Grayling's experience will help improve coordinating efforts between federal, state and local officers "to interdict drug traffickers and disrupt their links to terrorism and organized crime," she said.
