SAN SALVADOR (AFP) – Torrential rains caused by a low pressure system in the Pacific and the tail-end of Hurricane Ida killed some 91 people and left some 60 others missing in El Salvador, civil defense officials here said Sunday.
"We have to mourn the deaths of 91 people because of the rains," Interior Minister Humberto Centeno told a reporters here.
Civil Defense chief Jorge Melendez added that the rain and subsequent flooding was due to "low pressure ... and the remnants of Ida."
Hurricane Ida, which grew to a category two storm on Sunday, was meanwhile churning its way toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
Forecasters at the Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said Ida was packing top wind speeds of 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour.
