TOKYO (AFP) – Japan's only suspect in the killing of a 22-year-old British woman, who was arrested this week after two years on the run, has refused food for more than two days, police said on Friday.

Tatsuya Ichihashi, 30, has accepted only water and green tea, and "has not eaten at all" since his arrest late Tuesday, said a spokesman for the Gyotoku Police Department in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.

He has also refused to speak with police investigating the killing of British teacher Lindsay Ann Hawker, whose body was found in a sand-filled bathtub on his apartment balcony in early 2007.

Police may ask a doctor to examine him if he continues to refuse food, the official said.

Ichihashi, who underwent plastic surgery during his life as a fugitive, has been silent except for providing his name and other basic background information, reports said.
