Soldier shot dead in Afghanistan

LONDON (AFP) – A soldier has been shot and killed while on foot patrol in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence in London said on Sunday.

The soldier, from the 7th Battalion The Rifles but attached to the 3rd Battalion The Rifles Battle Group, was killed near Sangin in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan.

"It is my sad duty to inform you that this morning a British soldier from the 3 Rifles Battle Group was shot and killed while on patrol in Helmand Province," military spokesman David Wakefield said.

"He died in the course of his duty. He will be missed by us, his comrades, and we will remember him."

The death of the as yet unnamed soldier brings the British death toll in Afghanistan to 233 since 2001.
