TOKYO (AFP) – A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan on Tuesday, the meteorological agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami alert was issued. seismograph

The quake hit at 4:37 pm (0737 GMT) at a depth of 40 kilometres (25 miles) in the Pacific Ocean off northern Miyagi prefecture, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
