Poll: Obama holds slight lead over McCain

Democrat Barack Obama, 40 percent

Republican John McCain, 37 percent

Independents are basically split between the candidates — 32 percent favor Obama and 30 percent back McCain. Obama's lead over McCain is 9 percentage points if Hillary Rodham Clinton were to join him on the Democratic ticket and if Mitt Romney were to become McCain's running mate. Given the same veep scenario, 10 percent of voters say they don't know how they would vote. When asked who they believed would win the election — regardless of who they plan to vote for — Obama is named more than McCain by nearly two-to-one.

The Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll was conducted July 22-23 and involved telephone interviews with 900 registered voters. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Of those questioned, 378 were Democrats, which had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points; 300 were Republicans, which had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 6 percentage points. There were 167 independents, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 8 percentage points.
