Pakistan Shiites mourn those killed in triple bomb

LAHORE, Pakistan – Thousands of Shiite Muslims, thumping their chests and crying, mourned Thursday at funeral prayers for victims of a triple bombing that heaped more tragedy on Pakistan, which is already struggling to cope with devastating floods.

The blasts that targeted a Shiite ceremony late Wednesday in this eastern city were the first major attacks since flood waters tore through the country over the past month, destroying or damaging more than one million homes and prompting a major international relief effort that continues to struggle with the scale of the destruction.

The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks in a phone call to an Associated Press reporter.

A member of the group, who did not give his name but has previously spoken on behalf of the militants, said it was in revenge for the alleged killings by Shiites of members of a Sunni extremist ally of the group, Sipah-e-Sahaba.

The Obama administration on Wednesday added the Pakistani Taliban to its international terrorism blacklist and charged its leader with planning a suicide bombing in Afghanistan last year that killed seven CIA employees. The group has also been blamed for the failed car bombing in New York's Times Square.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit welcomed the U.S. action against the group, saying it was also banned in Pakistan.

At least 35 people were killed and 250 wounded in the attacks on a street procession marking the death anniversary of caliph Ali, one of Shiite Islam's most respected holy men. Two of the blasts were apparently suicide bombs.

Afterward, crowds torched a police station and vehicles. Authorities deployed paramilitary forces to restore order.

The bodies of eight victims — included a young child — were prayed over in a public park not far from the scene of the bombings. Security was tight, with police frisking mourners. Their families then took them to be buried.

"While the whole nation is distressed with the sufferings of flood affected, these terrorists are involved in promoting their own agenda," Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said in a statement condemning the blasts.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik vowed to crack down on Pakistani Taliban, which has been under pressure from army offensives in its strongholds in the northwest close to the Afghan border over the last two years.

"We will continue to take actions till the demise of Taliban," he told reporters.

Sunni militants have launched dozens of attacks against Shiites and other Islamic sects and religions in Pakistan in recent years. The extremists believe it is permissible — even honorable — to kill members of other faiths.

Allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban, the militants are also seeking to destabilize Pakistan's U.S.-backed government through such attacks.

Senior Shiite leader Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi demanded more protection, but said his community would never stop organizing yearly processions for Ali.

"We can sacrifice our life, but can not allow mourning processions to end," he said.

Pakistan was slow to recognize what army officers now say is the existential threat Islamist militants pose to the state. But over the last two years and amid heavy U.S. pressure, the army have been fighting back. They have had some success, but the militants have proved resilient

By any means necessary. The emptier a can, the greater its cantaker.
Islam's endemic conflict with itself and world lies in its fallacious roots.
Founded and always a colonizing political movement.
Religion, peace, equity, blah, blah but veils.
Lecherous Moe ham mad was travelled, literate, observant.
Educated and envious of Christianity and Judaism he emulated. Plagiarized bible.
Claimed illiteracy to legitimize his rantings as "allah's words", biblical prophets had predicted him, etc., etc.
Elevated the moon god allah, one of hundreds of arab gods, to position of sole, monotheist god.
And mad moe himself that insecure, jealous, bloodthirsty allah's only & final spokesman.
    No further discussion, Case Closed.
Islam's unable to deal with its dubious birth, repressive, mysogynist, bloodthirsty, genocidal history.
Beating a fetid dead horse, it's at peace only when able to exclude, eliminate ideas and influences not conforming with its demented dogma.
    Increasingly difficult.
Thus is glimpsed the truth about Islam.
Kept veiled beneath intricate facades of moralistic edicts, piety, pretensions.

Shias must have caused a lot of anger among the Sunnis by this public mourning. A quiet and discreet mourning would have served their long term interest better.

As a Pakistani I am just so sick of all this hate, murder, mass incompetence and self denial. What the hell is wrong with us? ' Islam is peace ' slogan has become a joke. Majority muslims think that being moderate = quietly getting on with life. Well it doesnt. Our silence, means we are complicit with those who not only murder in our own country but have changed this entire world for the worse. WAKE UP and SPEAK UP. Stop pointing fingers at America, Jews, Indians and the tooth fairy. We all live on this earth we have to put humanity first above everything else.
I see apathy and hatred for us and I cant even blame people. I have been trying to help the flood victims and the world is just sick of us and doesnt want to know. I see pictures of starving children standing in
endless lines waiting to be fed not having a clue about the hatred and mistrust that people have for them and their country. And I feel I am reponsible as much as the Taliban/corrupt officials/suicide bombers. Those of us that have been blessed with education/opportunity should have done more instead of getting on with our selfish lives.
I will speak up against Wahabism till my dying day, it is an insidious petrol funded hateful ideology that has destroyed Pakistan and we let it. When we allow terror to smother our compassion we let it win. Despite Pakistan being a complete mess I will try my best to help the innocent because my apathy is a victory for evil nut cases.
My sincere condolences to the Shia community for their terrible loss due to this dispicable act. To the majority of Pakistanis I have this to say: If we do not speak up for others then do not expect anyone to give a @#$% about us. All life is precious and valuable that should be our guiding principal.

One single act of Christian terrorism EXCEEDS all the acts of Muslim terrorism over last 50 years!

Why were Christian never blamed for genocide by Serbians against Bosnian which was based solely on religion?

It happened amongst Christian Europeans and they didn't do anything for 2 years... they were just bystanders ...probably enjoying what was going on. They did do one thing though! Use their NATO to block shipments of arms to the region knowing fully well that Bosnian were poorly armed and the weapons embargo worked in favor of Christian Serbians.
