The Ranier Racing Museum opened March 21 during a ceremony honoring its namesake, Harry Hale Ranier. The former Floyd County coal operator became famous in Winston Cup stock-car racing in the 1980s.
City officials, racing fans and Ranier's widow, Juda Combs Ranier, attended the ceremony. Ranier made a fortune during the coal boom and used some of the money to buy cars, which won 24 NASCAR races, including three Daytona 500s.
Baker was the driver of a Ranier-owned car that won the 1980 Daytona 500. Cale Yarborough won the 1983 and 1984 races for Ranier.
The 1983 Daytona 500 trophy and a photo of Ranier with Yarborough are displayed prominently.
