Fodor's: 2007 Guide to Cape Cod

Mon May 7, 11:00 AM ET

NEW YORK - Want to experience quintessential Cape Cod this summer?

The 2007 Fodor's guide, "Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard," has a few recommendations.

First, get on your bike! The Cape Cod Rail Trail, three bike routes through the Cape Cod National Seashore, and Falmouth's Shining Sea Trail provide great views of everything from verdant forests to sand dunes to the Vineyard Sound.

Second, check out the Cape Cod Baseball League - 10 teams, classic ball fields, good hot dogs, cheap tickets and talented players. Baseball at its purest!

Third, have some lobster - boiled and served with butter; in a salad on a roll; in a pie or in lobster bisque.

Fourth, take a lighthouse tour. There's Highland Light in Truro, Eastham's Nauset Light, Chatham Light, Nobska Light in Falmouth, and Aquinnah Lighthouse in Martha's Vineyard.

Other attractions around the Cape - aside from the beach, of course - include scenic Route 6 through Barnstable, Yarmouth Port and Dennis; the JFK Museum in Hyannis; old-fashioned ice cream shops like Sundae School in Dennisport and Buffy's in Chatham; or whale-watching tours from Provincetown.

Bear in mind that the hardest thing about your trip may be finding accommodations. House rentals are extremely expensive, and the best properties are rented out months ahead of time, often by the same returning families year after year. But the Fodor's guide says there are also campsites, B&Bs, and a variety of hotels and motels. Again, though, book well ahead of time, and be aware that many lodgings have minimum stays in peak summer season. If you only want to spend one or two nights, allow yourself plenty of time to secure a reservation.
