NEW YORK - It's that time of year when folks are packing their bags for the great American road trip. But don't give in to generic fast food from the drive-through window as you drive around the country.

The July issue of Men's Journal magazine has a section called "The Great American Menu" with dishes from A to Z worth seeking out on your travels - beginning with alligator. Yes, it truly does taste just like chicken, and you can try it at J.B.'s Fish Camp, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., on north Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.

B is for barbecue brisket at Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor, Texas, 40 minutes east of Austin, while C stands for crab - make that Dungeness crabs - at Bell Buoy of Seaside, Ore.

Skipping ahead through the alphabet, there's G for gumbo at Prejean's, in Lafayette, La., I for an ice cream shake made from huckleberries at The Victor Emporium, in Victor, Idaho, N for nachos made from five types of hot peppers at the Cowgirl Bar & Grill in Santa Fe, N.M., and T for tartare at Avenues in Chicago's Peninsula Hotel, which Men's Journal describes as "the country's finest raw steak."

The magazine even found something for X, Chinese soup dumplings called xiaolongbao, served at Jin Jiang in San Gabriel, Calif. For Y, there is yellowtail tuna at Okada, the sushi restaurant in Steve Wynn's Las Vegas casino, and finally, Z is for zarzuela is a mussel-based bouillabaisse served at Andaluca in Seattle.
