New guide: San Antonio, Austin, Texas Hill Country

NEW YORK – A new guidebook from Fodor's is out for a region of Texas that offers everything from the Alamo to theme parks to wineries.

Fodor's first edition of the guide to "San Antonio, Austin & the Hill Country" ($16.95) can help you plan a trip that includes outdoor adventure, family fun, history and culture.

For the kids, the region is home to SeaWorld San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and Schlitterbahn in New Braunsfels, which consistently wins high ratings as one of the best waterparks in the country.

Art-lovers will want to visit the Blanton Museum of Art and the Elisabet Ney Museum in Austin, as well as the McNay Art Museum, Umlauf Sculpture Garden and San Antonio Museum of Art, all in San Antonio.

For hiking and other outdoor activities, check out Enchanted Rock State Park between Fredericksburg and Llano, known for its 425-foot-tall pink granite dome; the Natural Bridge Caverns near New Braunsfels and San Antonio, and the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve and Zilker Park in Austin.

Fodor's Hill Country driving tour includes stops at Bandera, the "Cowboy Capital of the World"; the Y.O. Ranch in Kerrville; the German enclave of Fredericksburg, and Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park and other sites associated with the president.

A section on wineries in the Hill Country recommends visiting in the fall to catch festivals like the Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest and the Gruene Music & Wine Fest. Wineries listed in the book include Alamosa Wine Cellars, Fall Creek Vineyards, Torre di Pietra, Sister Creek Vineyards, Comfort Cellars, and Becker Vineyards among others.
