EAGAN, Minn. – Northwest Airlines Corp. said on Thursday it is reducing its fuel surcharges on cargo flights in some markets because of the declining cost of jet fuel.
Beginning Oct. 20, Northwest said NWA Cargo would reduce its fuel surcharge from 46 cents per pound to 42 cents per pound. The surcharge for shipments from the U.S. to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East will drop from $1.10 per kilogram to $1.05. Surcharges for shipments from the U.S. to Korea and Japan and back will also drop to $1.05 per kilogram.
Northwest said surcharges from the U.S. to Shanghai, Guangzhou, and points beyond, will decrease from 40 cents to 35 cents per kilogram. And surcharges on the longest routes in the NWA cargo network, including all other shipments between the U.S. and Asia, will decrease from $1.20 to $1.15 per kilogram.
Northwest runs the only cargo-only fleet among major passenger carriers.
On Thursday, Northwest shares rose 56 cents, or 8.5 percent, to $7.16 in morning trading on a day when other carriers' shares were up as well.
