COLUMBUS, Ohio – Low-fare AirTran Airways is about to make its arrival in Columbus.
Mayor Michael Coleman and Gov. Ted Strickland plan to be at the airport when the airline's first flight comes in early Thursday afternoon.
AirTran will offer nonstop service to Atlanta and to Fort Myers and Orlando in Florida. Introductory one-way fares are as low as $54 to Atlanta and $67 to Florida.
The airline will help fill the gap left in Columbus when homegrown discount carrier Skybus Airlines folded earlier this year.
In Ohio, AirTran also serves the Akron-Canton Airport and Dayton, less than 70 miles from Columbus. An AirTran spokeswoman says the new Columbus service will have no effect on the company's operations in Dayton.
