Eurotunnel CEO predicts no major drop in riders

PARIS – The head of Groupe Eurotunnel SA says the English Channel tunnel operator is in "good health" despite the recession, which is having a limited impact on leisure travel.

CEO Jacques Gounon told The Associated Press that he doesn't expect a big fall this year in the number of leisure passengers shuttled on high-speed trains under the English Channel between London and Paris.

He said traffic over the Easter holidays was similar to last year's. He believed that people in times of crisis still "need to get away from it all."

Gounon predicted that passenger traffic will be roughly the same as last year or perhaps a little weaker.

Eurotunnel has also been coping with the aftermath of a devastating fire that broke out last year in one of the trains that whizz through the tunnel.
