New guidebook to Michigan's Upper Peninsula

BERKELEY, Calif. – A new guidebook offers recommendations for exploring Michigan's Upper Peninsula region.

"Michigan's Upper Peninsula" ($17.95) is a first edition by Josh Bishop from Moon Handbooks. Moon's other titles span the globe, from Brazil to Moscow to California to Mexico, but Bill Newlin, publisher of Berkeley-based Avalon Travel, which owns Moon, said the company likes "giving local U.S. regions the same great coverage we do to more exotic destinations."

Newlin said Moon's overall guide to the entire state of Michigan has sold well since it was first published in 1999, "so when more and more travelers began telling us about the wonders of the Upper Peninsula, we were ready to listen."

He added: "We've always believed in treating down-home travel like far-flung adventure."

In a Q&A published on the Moon Web site at http://www.moon.com, Bishop, the author of the Upper Peninsula guide, identifies some of his favorite places in the area as Bond Falls, Mackinac Bridge, and the Chicaugon Lake Inn. For things to do with kids, he recommends visiting the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum in Marquette. Foodies will want to sample a local specialty, the pasty, with beef and vegetables in a pastry crust. Bishop also suggests the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock as a way to explore local ethnic heritage; and Isle Royale and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park as places to experience the outdoors.

"This is genuine wilderness in the American Midwest," Bishop says.

Among the only other guidebooks to the Upper Peninsula are "Michigan's Upper Peninsula," part of the "Great Destination" series from The Countryman Press, and "Hunt's Guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula."
