TORONTO - Fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer advanced to the third round at the $2.6-million Rogers Cup with a 6-4, 6-4 win over American Robby Ginepri on Wednesday.

The match was played after a nearly six-hour rain delay. It was just Ferrer's second career win in six matchups against Ginepri. In other action, Russian Marat Safin won his first-round matchup with American Sam Querrey. The match began Tuesday before being suspended by rain.

Safin was to play ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in a second-round match later Wednesday.
