Pirates' minor leaguers suspended for 50 games after doping offence

NEW YORK - Pittsburgh Pirates minor league pitchers Roman Carrasco and Luis Figueroa were each suspended 50 games Friday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance under baseball's minor league drug program.

Both right-handers tested positive for anabolic steroids, according to Major League Baseball. Carrasco tested positive for a metabolite of nandrolone. Figuera tested positive for stanozolol metabolites.

Both suspensions were effective immediately.

Carrasco, playing for the Pirates in the Venezuelan Summer League, was 7-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 12 starts. Figuera, also in Venezuela, was 6-2 with a 3.09 ERA.
