Democrat John Edwards led the way with $4.1 million, while Nader, who is mounting another independent bid for president, qualified for the least -- $411,000. Matching funds can be used through the primary season, which, for legal purposes, ends when the party nominating conventions conclude in late August and early September. Candidates who have dropped out of the race can still receive matching funds, which they can use to help pay off any outstanding debts. Edwards' debt, as of the end of May, was $355,000. He has to return any remaining money.
The other presidential campaigns to receive matching funds include: Democrats Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr, and Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, and Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter.
