Kentucky Senate Rivals Nearly Even In Banked Cash

Rand Paul, the son of a former presidential candidate with a large conservative following, went into October with $912,000 million banked for his Senate campaign in Kentucky.

Paul's primary election rival, Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson reported $1.1 million on hand after raising $643,000 from July through September.

The campaign of Paul, an eye surgeon and son of Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, brought in just over $1 million during the same period, using a national Internet-based fundraising network.

Paul is running to the ideological right of Grayson, the preferred candidate of the state's Republican establishment.

Grayson was in Washington last week for a fundraising event that featured fellow Kentuckian and Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, and was in town last month for a fundraiser at National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters that featured some two dozen GOP senators.

Paul and Grayson are vying for the GOP nomination to succeed Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., who is retiring.
