Lawyer: Don't question Hasan
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, accused of opening fire at Fort Hood on Nov. 5, killing 13 people and wounding 29 before civilian police shot him, is awake and able to talk. But his attorney, a retired colonel, said he's heading to San Antonio to meet his client and has asked investigators not to question Hasan.
Hasan reached out to communicate with Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical imam overseas who came under scrutiny in the past for possible links to terror groups, a U.S. official told AP on condition of anonymity.
Scott Roeder, accused of shooting a Kansas abortion provider in May, confessed to the slaying, telling AP he killed the doctor to protect unborn children. Gulf Coast residents hunkered down at home and in shelters as a rare, late-season tropical storm headed their way. Ida, downgraded from a hurricane on Mon., was expected to make landfall late Mon. or early Tue. The Supreme Court refused to block Tue.'s scheduled execution of sniper mastermind John Muhammad. He was convicted of slaying Dean Meyers amid a 3-week spree in '02 across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
