Sen. Evan Bayh responds

Tue Nov 7, 12:38 AM ET

We received hundreds of questions and comments for Sen. Evan Bayh (news, bio, voting record). Thanks to everyone for participating and to the senator for being a part of Talk to Power.

Sen. Evan Bayh

The interview took place in South Bend, Ind., while Sen. Bayh was campaigning for fellow Democrats. Questions were presented by Talk to Power host Judy Woodruff.

As Sen. Bayh is our last interview before the midterm elections, Yahoo! readers had questions about Nov. 7 and the Democrats' ideas. They also asked about

Iraq, medical care and other topics.

On medical insurance

One reader asked:

"I am a resident of the State of Indiana and mother of 3 children.  Do you have a plan for making medical insurance available to people like me ... to reduce medical costs so when someone has a period of time without insurance they don't have to worry about not being able to seek medical care?"

See Sen. Bayh's response.

On Iraq

Many of the questions on Talk to Power from Yahoo! readers deal with the subject of Iraq.

One asked, "What is your plan for Iraq? I hear a bunch of talk about how Bush is not getting it done but I never hear how to get it done?"

Another wrote: "Please articulate your specific positive plan in Iraq without attacking the opposition."

See Sen. Bayh's response.

Defining the war

Sen. Bayh initially backed

President Bush on Iraq but later said he was convinced that the administration had mishandled the war. A reader asked:

"How do Democrats send a clear message to voters that they demand a different plan in Iraq when many like yourself voted to invade Iraq and have supported the Bush administration's handling of Iraq in the past?"

See Sen. Bayh's response.

On alternative energy and the oil lobby

One reader asked:

"How can alternative fuels compete with the extensive oil lobby? Will politicians eventually realize that alternative fuels are a necessity not just a political leverage tool that gets lip service when gas prices rise and ignored when they fall?"

See Sen. Bayh's response.

Another asked:

"Dear Senator Bayh, I'd like to know when our government will institute more aggressive mandates directed at automobile manufacturers with regards to dramatically increasing the production of hydrid or alternative energy cars."

See Sen. Bayh's response.

On Democrats and the elections

One reader, a high school student, asked:

"If the Democrats take back [Congress] or even just one house, how can the party leadership try to unify all the factions to maintain a unitary voting bloc?"

See Sen. Bayh's response.

Judy Woodruff followed up by asking Sen. Bayh what he thinks the mandate is for the Democrats if they win due, in part, to people voting disapproval for the president.
